Why do so many people think dropping your helmets a few feet off the ground means you need to replace it?

It always amazes me how many people just mindlessly repeat what they heard without an ounce of critical thinking, its pretty obvious that dropping a helmet a few feet wont render it useless when it designed to protect your head when you eventually hug a tree at 30km/h. The "rule" is one big hit, not if a grain of sand scratches it buy a new one.

Edit: i'll just clarify what i meant by critical thinking.

Ya hear something, you're not sure? You look it up

Here's a source for my claim:
"They are optimized to prevent life-threatening catastrophic brain injury, not the milder forms of concussion. If they are softened to prevent mild concussions they will compress too fast and bottom out in the more severe impacts."
