The target audience for Runescape 3 is everyone and anyone

This is in response to the post earlier today saying that Runescape 3 has no identity because Jagex hasn't carved out a specific type of person that they're trying to target with the game.

I think one of the great things about Runescape has always been that it casts such a wide net in terms of potential audience. Both now and twenty years ago you've had players that want to sweat it out and just do whatever the current highest level combat activities are, players that just want to do some chill skilling (level-3 skillers anyone?), players that use the game more as an online chatroom than anything else, players trying to complete all the content they can... the list goes on.

One of the game's main strengths compared to most MMOs is that it doesn't try to target one specific type of player (which in the case of other MMOs is usually the PvM- or PvP-focused crowd) but rather that it has broad appeal to a huge variety of people. Having some people who want to only do PvM does not detract from people who just want to do laid-back skilling. If anything this variety of players has always been good for the game since it means if you want certain gear or items but you don't enjoy the activities that get you that gear or those items, you can instead buy it off of someone who does.

Runescape has great skilling content, it has great PvM content, and it has great questing content. The problem with the game has never been that it tries to distribute its efforts amongst all these different facets - the problem with the game was that it was being squeezed for all it was worth which meant that new content was becoming less and less well thought out as time went on so that it could be rushed out the door with fewer and fewer people working on it. This is a problem that, as we're seeing with the road to restoration, is being fixed as a lot of old content is being revisited as improved.

TLDR: Jagex doesn't need to target one type of player for the game to be successful - if anything the fact that the game has been around for so long is thanks to the fact that the game has targeted as broad an audience as possible.

jokasteve puts himself in as Team Liquid's substitute for the major

AFAIK he has never played T1 CS before, or really anything that would be considered even T2/T3. Is this 200 IQ GM'ing on display?
