The 2012 Derby House Fire: A plan to look like a hero ended in absolute tragedy

In May 2012, Mick Philpott’s ex-girlfriend packed up her kids and left him. Refusing to lose control, Mick hatched a scheme with his wife, Mairead, to set fire to their own house in Derby, England.

The goal wasn't to kill anyone. He planned to pour petrol through the letterbox "heroically" rescue his kids from the flames, and frame his ex for the arson to win custody back in court. Instead, the fire exploded out of control instantly. Thick toxic smoke trapped the children upstairs, and Mick couldn't get to them. Six of his children Jade, Duwayne, John, Jack, Jesse, and Jayden, tragically died from smoke inhalation. Afterward, Mick held a tearful press conference begging for help, but police bugged his room and caught him trying to keep their cover story straight. In 2013, Mick, Mairead, and their accomplice Paul Mosley were convicted of manslaughter.

It’s one of the most sickening examples of pure narcissism backfiring with fatal consequences.

In 2006, William Dickerson abducted and tortured a friend to death for an alleged affair with his girlfriend. He was sentenced to death by the state of South Carolina for the murder

In 2006, William Dickerson's girlfriend and another man allegedly engaged in a filmed sexual encounter. According to the prosecutorial narrative, Dickerson believed the affair partner to be his childhood friend, 29 year old Gerard Roper. At gunpoint, Dickerson confronted and demanded money from Roper at another friend’s residence and then pistol whipped and abducted him.

Reportedly over the course of 36 hours, Dickerson and two accomplices ripped teeth out of Roper’s mouth, sodomized him with a broomstick and gun, burned his scrotum, beat him with a vase and mirror, repeatedly slashed and cut his skin, and strangled him. According to court documents, Roper slowly succumbed to a combination of 200 external lacerations and dozens of internal blunt trauma injuries to his head, legs, hands, and rectum. Dickerson and his accomplices then abandoned Roper’s body in a vacant townhouse, and it was discovered hours later by a woman surveying the property.

During the torture, Dickerson called his girlfriend, and she recorded him and Roper discussing the details of the sexual assaults to her. Other acquaintances reported that Dickerson confessed to Roper’s murder to them. One of the accomplices also testified that Dickerson forced his involvement by threatening to cut out his unborn child from his pregnant partner’s womb.

After three years of proceedings, Dickerson was sentenced to death by the state of South Carolina. Per South Carolina Department of Corrections' records, Dickerson currently remains on death row.
