Acceptance

Therapy Thursday.

I certainly know, what misunderstandings can feel like, from both sides, for sure. I have explained, for 21 years, what the version of my therapeutic approach can and cannot do. To reassure people, those who are curious anyways, that mind control, Svengali style, completely lose consciousness, or anything associated with a chicken, are not part of the menu in a Hypnotherapy session.

So the text itself, got me thinking along one pathway, but like many things, was only a catalyst to a more global realization.

For many years, for many hours, and for vast number of people's, therapy has been associated with fixing someone. Like my aversion to the word "try" this misunderstanding is just plain and simply wrong! It implies that you are broken, when in actuality, in any form of therapy it's purpose is to repair, and there is a huge difference.

" You are mincing with words Kevin" but firstly words matter tremendously, and secondly I firmly believe that there is not any fly poop being extricated from pepper here at all.( an old man's colloquialism )

In any form of therapy, be in massage, chiropractic, rehab, mental or emotional, the basic task is to work with what and who we have, and utilize our talents to heighten and hone, to a healthier state.

Move beyond the construct that you are broken, and begin to conceptualize you need repair. Each and every single one of us, did what we did, when we did it, with the tools, understanding and knowledge we had in that very moment. Applying a judgement after the fact is just plain rude, and holding one up to scrutiny, post event, malicious.

As I can only speak to MY version of therapeutic approaches, we work with who you are, to mend and adjust, what you endured and experienced, to move towards a desired state of beingness.

No need to fix anything.

Precisely

Treatment Tuesday

I will admit it was the "treat" that initially caught my eye, and almost immediately after, the simplicity and purity of the concept, that made me know this was the one.

Perhaps a new variant of the Golden Rule, " Do unto others as you would have done unto you" but in this example self is placed as the primary focus, and that dear reader is what I espouse.

What is stopping, or holding you back, from following this simple mantra to a very enjoyable and fulfilling experience? Your answers won't be wrong, they are not a bad thing, they will be, however, where the work begins in repairing the you that you deserve.

I don't believe, for one moment, that the ideology of who ever wrote this, because we know the Universe cannot hold a pen, or use a keyboard, does lead to a more satisfying and peaceful experience while on this spinning rock.

I encourage you to contemplate and pontificate, how your life could benefit.

You always have value

Feelings Friday

In my world, perspectives matter. The disposition, mood, and energy, to which I am receiving and transmitting, in my world, heavily influenced by perspective. Admittedly, it was the resemblance to Howard the Duck that drew my eye to this particular poster, but it was the words that activated the muse.

This past week, I have seen the trends, to which I have been attracted to, and realize there is some healing going on within, as the generalized scope has been focused on perception and process.

I aide people who, fundamentally, are in a period of discontent in their lives. The discomfort of that realization, what ever it may be, creates a sufficient propellant to opt for a change and want a new way of being. For some they have a clear and concise idea, and for others it is the " I know I don't want this anymore " statement.

So, everyone I meet is motivated, is practicing self love, and is actively demonstrating an aspect of their warrior's spirit.

To what degree, is the only real variable.

When you wake up in the mornings, no matter what shitstorm you could be facing, take a few seconds to reflect that you indeed woke this morning, which is a great start, because there will come a day when that doesn't happen and all hope for betterment is finished.

It is your body's way of saying I am here, willing to give it another go.

Everything else is a work in progress and potential alternatives.

Be a great host, friend to self, and beacon of inspiration.

Stick or Carrot

Therapy Thursday.

I made the choice to feature this message, in my writings this morning, although there were a few which I scrolled through that inspired.

Perhaps what drew me to liking this meme/ poster, was it triggered something from my initial training as a hypnotist and then hypnotherapist, which was the basic and fundamental carrot / stick factors to motivate and compell action. Back then we used the words love or towards motivation and fear/ push against.

Working in mental health therapy, helping the 1000's of people that I have, both clinically as well as in general, I believe my sampling was a sufficient enough population to comment with some confidence, that there is not a third category, and what I learned held some serious chops and accuracy!

The added information of what happens physiologically, just further explains how we manifest the physical symptoms and results .

Yes dear reader, I am very much aware that human expression and emotions are not the black and white, cut and dry extremes, insinuated in the poster, so if you have made it this far in your reading, throttle back on the outrage!

The therapeutic part for today, would be to actively engage in the towards , giving, love mindset, even for a couple hours and take note if you experience something differently.

To put it in the simplest of terms, I adore this example: most people loathe the ideology of Monday's right? Monday's have a bad rap, as it corresponds to the return to work etc. The mindset when our vacation starts on a Monday, is completely different, in anticipation and excitement, but Monday's haven't changed at all.

Comforts

Treatment Tuesday.

There is a story I use, from the Orange chair, regarding the two drivers for motivation and movement.

Push away from or pain related and towards a desired outcome or want. The analogy involves a dog, a barn, a bail,a bailer twine salesman and the farmer. It illustrates the discomforts which we have become acquainted with, are familiar, we have adapted to their characteristics, so we exist daily.

​

In my case, I am aware that as a 61 yr old male, who is a heart patient, and is overweight, physical activity, cardiovascular stimulation, could help with overall energy and perhaps longevity.

There isn't a rational and conscious though t which deludes me to any other realization.

However the comforts of this sedentary, salads are for rabbits, scotch drinking, cigar indulging, I'll enjoy that fried chicken cutlet with hunters sauce, mofo, are significant enough to keep me contemptuous about the need to get off my boney Saracca and walk or jog a bit more.

Familiarity does breed and culture contempt.

​

Emotionally and intellectually, I believe it is not the case at all. That being involved in the helping of others with their "stuff" it brings a benefit to me. By osmosis I still reap the rewards of the approaches, the tactics and methods to which I administer for others.

​

So I completely understand people's hesitation to venturing out from the comfy camp they have created, but then again, if it is beside a landfill, the smell just never goes away, and you will realize there are better places to be.

​

That's where therapy helps best in my opinion.

​

The Good, Bad and Ugly

Mindset Monday

​

Good, Bad or Ugly, is not just the name of a famous spaghetti western, but also describes the magnificent brain you house in between your earlobes, and the fluid state to which it changes.

​

Genetic predisposition is a way of explaining medical conditions and potential future issues, but not to reason away our way of thinking. That falls into the category of conditioning, like Pavlov wrote about, the monkey see monkey do absorbing by osmosis kind of stuff.

​

Here is the breakthrough from what I can determine from my therapy chair; genetics are hard wired into the RNA and DNA at the cellular level, conditioning is only wired in our neuro-pathways and as such, possess a certain range of flexibility.

Phrases like this is who I am, or I have always done it this way, strong indicators that a choice was made, and thankfully even that is not fixed in stone.

​

What sparked the inspiration, for today's piece, was a quote I read "At your very best, you still won't be good enough for the wrong person, but at your absolute worst, you'll still be worth it to the right person."

​

What was triggered inside, for my personal reflection, is that the areas of awareness and focus do change based on the environment and the company I am in, that I pay attention to different language patterns and thoughts as a son, as a partner and spouse, as a parent and as a friend. All of which are still me, and none that actually defines who I am.

That may sound heavy or just lip service, but I believe we are the sum of all our experience thus far, and the grey matter which processes it is both faulty and bias, reducing, simplifying and stream lining for brevity. Highly functional, absolutely, incredibly reliable, not so much.

​

You are not your past, you are not your stumbling or failures, what you are is a pool of resources to which you can review and draw on, to establish guidelines to ensure you make intellectual and adaptive strategies for your well-being and future.

​

You are all about change, like it or not, and that change gets to be with you input and influence.

​

Tidbit Tuesday

A delightful gem from Louise Hay today on the realization that our current method is not in actuality bringing the results we desire (see Einstein for a cross reference quote).

A conversation which takes place inside the lobes, both ear and frontal, which is depreciating and belittling, serves absolutely no purpose, it doesn't keep someone humble, it certainly doesn't keep the nasty ego in check or anything else EXCEPT to keep you defeated and small.

There is the snide comment we make anout people who drive jacked up trucks, or wear too much, are way over the top in braggarting and must always have the last word, and be right in everything. The compensation is usually a strong indication of a wound which is still open and hurting, needing that validation they matter or are significant for all their world to see.

So what is the trend of being small and insignificant, not worthy protect or heal. Many, contend that it stems from how to survive an abusive environment. Not only does a person project a non threat energy, but by osmosis, or immersion, inherits the absurd abuses for control, by demeaning dialog.

I get caught up in those dog kennel pieces, showing the emotionally beaten, or terrified pooches and the rehabilitation process they experience, when I am doom scrolling??? More powerful than the silly ads of those big literally puppy dog eyes, looking for a donation to be a part of the change IMO.

My tidbit is this: if we can muster humanity, kindness and support in our external world, the redirecting of our nurturing can be turned internally.

The Power behind a survivor, is usually quite and knowing, no need for flash, but no longer accepting to be small, and that dear reader makes all the difference to a new version of purpose.

It is a fascinating and beautiful place to be a part of, someone's healing journey, from the therapy chair.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness Monday

I believe that all too often, we misinterpret or misunderstand the quirks and bumps in our lives, that they are demonized and therefore for a commercial perspective get to be excercized out by a product or pill. Unfortunately, I think, our understanding of what anxiety and the affiliate disorders it generates, are one of those chosen quirks.

To say anxiety has become a buzz word and therefore also a trigger is probably not any slice of embellishment. Previously known as or A.K.A. pantophobia or anxiety neurosis, as early as the 1800's, it sounded alot more ominous back then, and for those curious pantophobia breaks down literally translated to fear of everything.

I am not mocking those who suffer with anxiety disorders, on the contrary, what a person experiences in their minds is proprietary and legitimate FOR THEM. I have built an entire career and practice on assisting people in treating the condition.

What I am challenging is the disassociative state we frame the context in, disempowering ourselves from believing we can alter ir change the effects as it is somehow outside of oursleves ( which in actuality could not be further from the reality).

Secondly is how anxiety is categorized in the bad pigeonhole, instead of it being more about being anxious, repeatedly. And we all have experienced anxious thoughts, job interviews, first dates, Christmas morning as a child, but also let it go after the come and gone phase.

Relief from anxiety can be initiated by not pushing back against it, in attempt to squash the process, but moreover quieting the sound track of panicky chants, long enough to hear what the actual message is .

If you do something enough times consciously that it does become a regular go-to pattern for all things similar.

So whether you are perpetuating the cycle or breaking the cycle is largely influenced by practice and repetition.

Using hypnosis in the therapy format, meerly lays a template for directions or holographic pathways to bypass the old ruts, to travel down.

Although the symptoms and side effects may be unpleasant, anxiety is that part of your brain which is hyper vigilant on protective mode.

Words to live by

Wisdom Wednesday

Sometimes...most times it is the little things, the obvious, right under our nose, types of thoughts that are most helpful. Our past, is like visiting the library, full of useful references , knowledge and even understanding, however life doesn't live there ( for the younger crew... Wikipedia perhaps). Even visits to museums and historical sites, can only be sources of learning, not the ability to feel the toil, anguish and hardships of that place or time.

In our future there is nothing more and subsequently nothing less than possibilities. Good, bad or ugly, unknown, and placing a label on the experiences, a privilege of being on the otherside of them. Like claiming a new uncharted land and planting your flag on it, you have to be landed, not remote.

What I do want to share is hope is one of the most underrated emotions that we have the ability to experience.

Even the mild, timid, soft spoken kind is an incredible place to start, with all the choices and opportunities we ignore daily, perhaps because they are so routine, remove it and listen to the lamentation.

Your reality isn't only around you, atleast the one which you exist it, but the ability to be more grounded does. In many workshops I have participated in, a takeaway for me was, our capacity for situational awareness or learning that the situation is always boss, but you get to define the situation. Stop doubting your potential.

Which leads to, only you get to know you. No one else, no matter how close, will ever share that privilege, some may learn more than others, but you are the only one who knows it all, if you choose to.

I find it interesting, when helping clients work through their "stuff", when asked what they believe is holding them back from accomplishing what the want, how many haven't spent that quality time within to know. Often we have been on autopilot, and never realized we were off course.

Perhaps, this best sums up what I do as a hypnotherapist. I help guide yoh back to being on YOUR course, and remind you of the simple things from the list.

Mindset Monday

Monday Mantra.

If you are to exist with an audio loop in your head, do your best to make it this one!

Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP was the brainchild of 2 radical and adventurous scientist, Dr's, John Grinder and Richard Bandler, on stream lining mental and emotional change work. The recognition and acknowledgement that the vocabulary we use, the structure of our sentences and the tense we communicate in, has a direct correlation to how a person's comprehension of a message or situation.

These two studied the language patterns and communication skills of some pretty heavy hitters is the psychological world, perhaps the all stars of their clinical practices, Fritz Perls, Virginia Satire and ofcourse my hero, Milton Erickson , all showing remarkable results in their respective fields, using words.

Perhaps the original intentions were to hone the approach and expedite the results, I am not sure, but I can say that the concepts of modeling and and meaning took off world wide.

For those who follow , or read my book Sorry... Why...Try. know how there are certain pieces of vocabulary which have a consistent effect on our mindset and thoughts.

Although the child's mantra about bullying, "stick and stones may hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me" may be comforting, it is indeed false, like alternate truths out there now.Words do stick in our heads, and erode motivation, self- worth and esteem, creating wounds that are invisible to the X ray machine or an MRI, but equally as damaging as that compound fracture or dislocation

Switch from Fortran to C++ or Linux ( goes to ahow how out of touch I am) if that is a step towards higher efficiency ans better performance, internally speaking. Know that every word spoken, vocalized or not, has to pass through that part of our brain that seeks and references the context. Which means we interpret

and subsequently reinforce a neuro pathway in our own resources.

Negative Nellie and Stinkin Thinkin do not exist without practice.

Neuro-plasticity

Friday's Feelings

The notion of neuro-plasticity, and for that matter the use of the word, is less than 100 yrs old, closer actually to my time line, back in the 60's although there are articles as far back as late 19th century referencing it's existence.

I share this with you, because what we have now adopted as a new buzz word in mental health care, has been studied for 150 years, generously, and only with any real clarity fo 60 if them. However like the "discovery" of the Atom, it does not imply that either of these, along with so much more in the list, didn't occur previously!

Our brains have been rewiring to adapt to circumstances from the beginning of time, if you want real evidence, take a look at development of the pre- frontal cortex, in my opinion. We built a subsequent annex for handling our thoughts at some point in time. So as a therapist sitting in the "orange chair" don't try to tell me that your challenges are too difficult to change, that your proclivity is somehow inherited and genetically ordained. I PERSONALLY DON'T BUY INTO YOUR B.S. and as your therapist that is what you came to see ne about, to begin with.

I have oversimplified the nuance and complexity of the science, but conceptually I am confident in my belief and optimism. We are creatures of habit yes, and also centers of change and development. No matter what you might believe about being stuck, the irrefutable evidence demonstrates your ability for change down to the cellular level, and that is just what we get to observe with our naked eye .

I experience the power and adaptability of our grey matter daily, so damn straight I am a evangelist about your ability to learn, to adapt and to change towards what you envision for self.

Optics

Therapy Thursday

I was in session the other day, with a strong case of perceptions bias, messing with self- confidence and image. Perhaps, the image which caught my eye no pun intended, it was inspiration for today's post.

Optical illusions have been around forever, in this intentional format, which provides moments of entertainment, or in the case of the happy traveler with stripped shirt, wire rimmed frames and a red and white touque, hours of intense focus to pass the time. The actual premise of jigsaw puzzles, founded on your ability to piece together literally, fragments into a complete image, exercising the area of your brain that fills in the blanks of your world.

Perceptions are how we process our outside world to a format our bumps and valleys, Grey matter, can interpret.

Based and delivered by our 6 senses, which are not the best in range or capacity, compared with all the species, to a brain which is impatient to get you a complete message, and will add subtract and omit, to get that presented.

This realization, and I hope one of those Aha moments, brings about a little releif and understanding, when we are subject to judgements and criticism. There are always comment on my posts, and I look forward to them all, some compliments, some not so much. What it demonstrates well though,how black and white words with fairly rigid definitions can be ingested, interpreted and generate such a cornucopia of responses. That is using words and letters, just imagine what takes place with all the distractions in real life.

There is only one authority in the discerning of you, your life and your feelings. All of them are valid, but also know that much of it is under suspicion and brevity.

Similarly to when someone says " to be perfectly honest " raises the questions in my head, are you dishonest in previous encounters, and its usually prefaces a harsh judgements from the sender.

So I don't encourage being honest with your self, as it then leads, in most instances , to the harsh truths, the ugly honesty.

Be real and be present with yourself, my best case desire.

Trance therapy aides in finding that place which is safe from within.

Motivation Monday

Monday's Motivation.

I was in one of those moments that I doing the old " check up from the neck up" opportunities, after observing a few instances of road rage and belligerent behavior while doing my Sunday morning grocery routine, when this concept became the muse.

I like how all the major ingredients are listed, and specifically anger and ego, for I believe that it is the ego which feeds the anger to a rage state, and the rage state then ignites the call to battle and revenge, tripping over the urges and impulse trigger. Atleast that is how I approach the process therapeutically. My suspicion, is when surrounded by ego-concentric personalities a few tell tale signs show, as simple as the chronic need to have the last word, be right always and argue until you feel satisfied that victory was accomplished, find competition in innocuous events, and parade them , coincidentally like May long weekend parade.

Where is the Motivation, in this Kevin, you could be asking by now?

The space of our Amygdala, and that which it occupies atop the brain stem is still an aspect of our reptilian brain, centered around survival. Our prefrontal cortex is the miraculous addition and development, that activates as we grow older, so getting stuck and not utilizing the other, more modern, and sophisticated regions, simply enforces the remaining in the child like manner of thinking.

As a developing identity, it is a huge step in establishing our relationship with the rest of the tribe, as a grown up not so much.

There is a technique which enforces as part of the healing, find all those things that anger and upset you, and you have the beginnings of who or what has control with you.

Breathe in deeply and exhale, excercise and stimulate the larger and more complex part of your grey matter and let yourself choose to be free.
