This very well may be one of the first automobile trips into Yosemite Valley. The Stanley Steamer was nicknamed “The Flying Teapot”

Best serene mountain village for family ryokan and onsen?

Bringing my family (spouse and two tween children) to Japan for the first time in late November. I’ve been to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka previously with friends and can’t wait to return. I love the cities but want to mix things up on this trip and see at least one smaller, quieter village.

We have two weeks in Japan as a family. We were originally planning 5 nights in Tokyo then 5 nights Kyoto and finishing with a 3 nights at Tokyo Disney. I would love to spend a night or two at a ryokan with an onsen so our family can relax and experience a slower more nature focused side of the culture.

Considering shaving a night or so from either our Tokyo or Kyoto days to stay somewhere less touristy like Hakone or Yamanaka/Kanazawa.

What are some of the best mountain villages or even specific family friendly ryokan and onsen located conveniently within a few hours of travel from Kyoto or Tokyo?
