How do we cancel flights after check in?

I’m on the way home from the airport and I’m really confused at the moment. I booked a one way YVR-YYC for myself and my daughter - flying today, Flex. The fare rules show that I can cancel the flight within 45 min of boarding and have refund to wallet.

1.5 hrs before boarding I went to cancel the flight and found it cannot be done in the app anymore. Hassle. I log into the website and find that both cancel and change flight options are greyed out.

I try calling and eventually get a message that there is a 2 hr wait for an agent. I grab by tablet, hustle to the customer service desk and the 2 agents aren’t busy (yay) I explain the issue, show that I cannot do the cancellation myself and ask if they can help. One agent indicates that he has cancelled both of our tickets but that they cannot do anything for refunding and give me a card to go to a website.

I confirm with both agents that A) my fare is eligible for refund and that B) they’ve cancelled our booking (not check in as I had easy cancelled that).

As I drive home I see my booking is still valid and that I can check in. Is this thing now? Am I really going to have to fight to get my credit and how on Earth do I prove anything?

I’ve cancelled bookings in the past few years and this is definitely a first for me.
