[help please!] Macbook Pro 10,1: OCLP boot not visible on disk select after accidental update, input devices, USB peripherals and backlight non-functional except in recovery mode, safeboot on home drive goes back to disk select without booting into OS.
As per the TL;DR title, I let someone else use the machine only for them to update it after telling not to mess around in the settings. Anyway, booting into the standard home drive takes me to the log in screen though the on device keyboard and track pad are non-functional, wallpaper loads as expected. Went to the docs to find this page, though I don't have a USB A hub to test this out and the docs reference even older macbook pros to be affected, not the 2012 model in question
Worth noting the following:
- attempting a safemode boot by holding shift on the only visible disk in the boot menu loads for a minute ten spits me back out at the boot selector instead of a the log in page,
- booting into recovery works absolutely fine,
- using a power only USB A to USB C adapter I did manage to find out that although external keyboards won't work, enough power is still being delivered to charge a phone, and
- I've lost the original installer drive and only have an 8GB drive and a machine running Linux at the ready. I could try creating installer media using a third party tool but i'm not sure they'd be good copies, as per this github page.
This might then be a missing driver issue as per the docs, and I'm wondering if there is a way to find the drivers I need on a separate machine, download them onto a flash drive and install them using the recovery mode terminal or some other software. Problem here is I believe the drive is encrypted with FileVault2, though I'm not sure how to test that and how installing those drivers would work. I could always fall back to a clean OSX install, but I'd rather keep the data on the disk... I have no backups. If there is a way to unlock the drive (I know the password still, its just I can't interface with the UI,) please do let me know!
