Y’all are doing too much

I’ve been on this sub for over a decade now and there is one new trend I’m starting to see a lot of: most posts from people who are struggling with their hair follow a routine that uses too many products and too many labour-intensive techniques when they don’t need to.

I can totally see how this happens. A lot of beginners either pick up some random curly-labelled products at the store or see a content creator do a certain routine with multiple steps and figure that will work for them too, and then when it doesn’t, it’s hard to know why it might have not worked.

Here’s my recommendations on what to do instead. Start with assessing the situation without leave-in products. Wash and condition your hair then let it air dry.

From there ask yourself the following questions:
1 - does my hair look nice enough as is? If yes, don’t bother with products. If no, proceed.

2 - does my hair feel dirty despite washing it? You might have product or metal build up, use a chelating cleansing shampoo before conditioning then proceed.

3 - are the curls too fluffy/fuzzy/frizzy and I want distinct curl clusters like when my hair is wetter? If yes, you need a hold product. Which type depends on your hair. Usually the coarser/thicker your hair the heavier the hold product. This is not a hard rule but a good first guess. If the product isn’t giving you the level of definition you want, go heavier. If your hair is getting greasy, go lighter. Spread the product evenly around the hair and apply extra where you see the most fuzziness in your “no product” results. For many people that’s the tips, but for some it’s the roots or a patch of hair that refuses to form nice curls for whatever reason.

Note: if the product gives you a hard cast, that’s not a bad thing but you’re not done. Casts are meant to be broken mechanically (dry scrunch and root fluff). A big mistake I see a lot is that people use oil to break their cast. This undoes the work of the gel because oil will soften the hair back up too much. Do not use oil to break a cast unless it’s still too hard after scrunching and fluffing your hair dry. If your hair becomes frizzy after you break their gel cast, oil is not the answer, but rather conditioning, proceed to the next step.

4 - is my hair still frizzy despite seeing curl clusters? Do I get a strong “halo” of frizz despite using a hold product? If yes, you probably need a conditioning product. Same guidelines applies as for hold: coarser/thicker hair typically need heavier conditioning products, so start based on that. Sometimes a combined hold and conditioning product takes care of hold and conditioning at the same time. For example, a creamy mousse can do both for someone with fine hair and loose curls; a custard-jelly can do both for someone with thicker hair and tighter curls.

Say now you have definition and no frizz but your hair is a bit flat.

5 - do I have way less volume than when my hair has no products in it? If yes, you might have smoothed your hair down too much. You can add back texture using a texture spray or foam, or you can experiment with replacing any products that have extreme slip and conditioning with ones that are a bit less slippy.

This gets most people through most of their problems. But what if your curl pattern is too uneven, and your curls have different textures? Then go to 6.

6 - is my curl pattern too uneven for my liking? This is where styling brushes and finger coiling do their magic. These techniques will allow you to form identically sized strands and allow you to direct the curls in the direction you want, which will “standardize” your curls all over your head.

I hope this helps and if there is something I didn’t touch on, please tell me and I’ll be happy to help. I’ve been on the curly hair journey for decades and have also helped many friends and family members with finding a decent curly hair routine so I’ve seen more textures and hair types than just my own.

My current routine:
- Andrelon Oil and Care Shampoo
- Andrelon Oil and Care Conditioner and detangle
- Umberto Giannini Mousse raked in
- Curl Smith Fragrance Free Strong Hold Gel with prayer hands then scrunched all over

Wondering why I waste money on products when this is no product result!

I know the frizz is there but they feel so light and fluffy!! Too bad they look like this just on wash day. Routine: alama curl shampoo and conditioner, upside down shake, air dry.

Edit: didn’t expect so many reactions! Thank you for your kind words. It’s been a long journey and this is the healthiest theyve been. I usually use a curl cream and mousse to get definition and make them last longer. Now that we’re out of the winter, the sunny weather is definitely helping them dry properly. This is gonna change as soon as the summer humidity kicks in, but until then I’m gonna enjoy xD

I cut it all at once!

I've been cutting my own hair for many years. I decided that the best way to avoid disaster is just to cut a curl or two at a time (and only when it was dry). My hair felt damaged/dry because it had been several months since I had made more than just the occasional cut. I broke my rule and cut it all at once and luckily I think it turned out okay. (Photos taken on second or third day after washing.)

Routine (see photo for products): Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Shampoo and Conditioner. Towel dry and comb through with widetooth comb. Scrunch in Boucleme Curl Creme. Air dry.

How to go from tight, stiff/dry coils and flat volume-less roots to full, soft, and voluminous bouncy curls? (Bottom pic is me, top pic is the goal)

Heyy, so as the pic suggests I’m trying to change my routine and my hair for the better. Recently this has been my schedule:

-Wetting hair everyday in the shower
-conditioning each time I wet my hair
-putting leave in, air drying, and scrunching everyday
-shampooing once every 2-3 days

Shampoo = garnier honey loving blends
Conditioner = garnier honey loving blends
Leave in =Nohraan Creme de pentear

What should I do to achieve volume, softness, shine, and shape in my hair? It’s been growing without a cut for almost a year now and it just looks so… lackluster… it’s been feeling quite dry and tangling up sometimes too lately, even though I still condition everyday and put leave in everyday too. I just rlly don’t know what to do w this thing.

Are my layers too uneven?

Hi all. I’m wondering if my haircut looks bad. I don’t like how thin it looks at the very bottom and I’m wondering if I’d be better off if I just chopped that little section off. I’ve been trying to not touch my hair and grow it out, but I am tired of looking at those wispy little strands at the bottom.

As far as my routine, I use the Matrix Food for Soft shampoo & conditioner and I apply the Trader Joe’s hair oil when it’s still damp & comb with a wide-tooth comb. I put it in a french braid to dry. I don’t use bonnets or silk pillowcases or anything like that. I am aware that I have some dead ends that need to go.

Any insight is appreciated!!

One of the best wash days I’ve had! Wanted to share :)

Had been a while since I diffused instead of air dry!

Routine:

  1. Shampoo is Shea Moisture’s Manuka Honey.

  2. Conditioner is Noughty’s To the Rescue

  3. Leave-in conditioner is AG’s Recoil

  4. Gel is Aussie’s Instant Freeze, applied in medium strands and defined with Denman brush.

  5. Diffused.

  6. On wash days like this I wear a silk bonnet to bed along with a satin pillow case. Wash days usually last me about 2-3 days if I’m not sweating too much.

Baby hairs/flyaways

Hi everyone,

I have a pretty bad case of baby hairs/flyaways that just won't grow and there's nothing I can really do to tame them.

I'm never able to wear any type of updo unless it's a super tight slickback with loads of gel, which I avoid doing because I feel like tight hairstyles are damaging to my hair.

Sometimes I would just like to be able to wear a normal ponytail or bun, but not even 5 minutes after putting my hair up I look a complete mess.

For my hair routine, I use not your mother's curl talk for almost everything except leave in conditioner, which is the blue Skala. I also let my hair air dry and I sleep most nights with a satin bonnet.

Does anyone have any tips?

Thank you! 😊

My wavy hair keeps getting huge

**edit - I have included a picture of my hair in the comments**

This year I’m really committed to figuring out my wavy/curly hair.

For context, I’ve had a short bob all my life. Now that I’ve let it grow out in my 20s I discovered it has curls / waves. I have tried wavy hair routines (see below for full routine and products) but has only seemed to produce good looking curls once and almost always looks stringy and frizzy.

I then of course give in and brush it out and that’s when it gets …. Big (see picture).

Not sure if I should give into the volume or keep trying for curl definition. Any advice would be appreciated x

ROUTINE

In the shower

  1. not your mothers shampoo 3x a week
  2. Not your mothers conditioner 3x a week (prayer hand method)

Out of shower

  1. Function of beauty leave in for wavy hair prayer method focused on ends and mid length 5x a week
  2. NYM gel 3-4x a week (whenever I have time)
  3. Plop with cotton t shirt until dry and then scrunch out w t shirt

- 6. It looks stringy (ESPECIALLY if I diffuse even on low heat setting) so I brush it out with the bounce brush 😔😬

I use the pineapple method for sleeping and refresh by spray bottle

Styling my hair upside down made such a difference! But is it normal for the top to be stiff?

I really like the way my hair turned out when styling it upside down, but I feel like I can’t really do anything to it since it’s crunchy? Like I can’t part it differently because it’ll break up the curls and look stringy. Is that normal? I did scrunch in oil too but the top is like dense to where I can’t move it much.

Routine:

  1. Kevin Murphy hydrate me shampoo and conditioner
  2. Brush hair upside down
  3. Rizzos curl cream applied with praying hands and scrunched slightly (still in the shower)
  4. not your mothers mousse applied with praying hands and scrunched in (still in the shower)
  5. Not you mothers gel applied with praying hands & scrunched (still upside down)
  6. Cotton T shirt to scrunch out excess water then diffused upside down

how to create a gel cast ?!

I realised I had curly hair a couple of years ago, then with curly hair method it improved, but now its just gone frizzy and no definition :( i live somewhere with hard water, and when i do a curl refresh aka get it wet, apply gel, scrunch and let it air dry - i get a cast !

at the moment my routine is: shampoo twice (umberto giannini), condition (purple hair mask since i have a small amount bleached at the front), then out of the shower i used a wide toothed comb to brush throw some curl cream ( frizz no more), then scrunch, gel with praying hands (eco argan oil), plop for 10 mins then diffuse from a distance and then scrunch diffuse

I have tried so many different methods to no avail! My hair is SO curly when wet then i just loose it all when while I dry it :( please help this damsel in distress ! thank you ❤️

low key upset at how well this gel is working for me

I recently found a liter of the ouidad advanced climate control stronger hold gel on the clearance rack at Marshalls and picked it up in a whim. My day 3 hair has no business looking this good, especially after 2 days of rain! The giant bottle will last me forever, but then I'll seriously have to contemplate purchasing it for the crazy price it retails for 🫣

Routine:

Shampoo - trader Joe's tea tree tingle

Conditioner - mane and tail ultimate gloss (the kind made for horses)

Stylers - skala crespa divino 3-in-1 as leave in and ouidad advanced climate control stronger hold gel

Brushed with bounce curl dupe and diffused to about 80% dry then air dried the rest of the way. I sleep with a bonnet and satin pillowcase, and refresh by scrunching/smoothing sections of hair that need it with wet hands right out of the shower.

Feeling the curls today

Routine is kantu clarifying shampoo, detangle with garnier banana hair food. Then run boots curl creme through it before scrunching umberto gianna gel in :)

Cant figure out why my hair is frizzy and undefined

Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out what’s going on with my hair because I feel like I’ve been stuck for a long time. My hair looks frizzy/undefined when dry, but when it’s fully soaking wet in the shower there is basically no frizz at all and the curls/clumps look much better.

Some details: Hair gets wet whithin a few minutes in the shower.

If i separate/open up a wet curl clump in the shower the hair inside of it is completely dry

My hair dries in about 2 hours

I sleep with it fully dry in a pineapple and i dont touch it while its drying

My current routine:

Wet hair thoroughly

Shampoo

Rinse shampoo out

Detangle

Wet hair again

Conditioner (3 pumps left side + 3 pumps right side)

Leave in for 15 minutes

Fully rinse out

Products:

Curly secret shampoo and bye bye knots conditioner

Sporadicaly curly secret support hair mask

Sometimes i use curly foam from the same brand but only on the ends of my hair

Why I’m confused:

Even only slightly heavier products make my hair look much worse, greasy, dirty, crunchy or weird.

Gel/mousse in the past almost always went wrong and made my hair feel/look bad (hard/crunchy/dirty feeling). Foam only seems to work on the ends. If I use it higher up, it becomes stringy.

Any thoughts and advice is appreciated

What should I do with my hair?

Sorry for the bad photos

After washing my hair, the sides stick out quite a lot which I hate, but after sleeping on the sides they flatten. But constantly throughout the day I have to keep brushing them down with my hand; I really don’t like when they stick out. The only downside is the sides lose their curls from me brushing them.

I like the top to be tall.

I am considering a haircut but I have a wide face and puffiness and I’m worried it will make that more noticeable (my face is more wide in real life).

Do I need a haircut at this point?

How can I improve my hair routine? My hair becomes dry a day after washing and the curls don’t hold.

Shampoo: Kérastase Curl Manifesto
Conditioner: Davines Love Curl Hair Mask

I wash 2x a week.
Shampoo and rinse.
Conditioner brushed through my hair and I let it sit for 10-15 minutes before washing it out.
Then I scrunch my hair to increase curls.
I let it air dry usually

4 months into my curly hair journey, still battling frizz.

Hey everyone! I’m 4 months into my curly hair journey and frizz is still my biggest struggle. My hair has nice curl definition when it cooperates, but it dries out very quickly and gets frizzy.
My hair routine
Wash 2x per week (alternate Odele clarifying shampoo and Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk shampoo)
• Condition with wide tooth comb in the shower only( I was using Marc Anthony’s but just bought shea moisture coconut and hibiscus conditioner to try)
• Leave-in: Odele
• Styling: Dove mousse (planning to try a gel next)
• Scrunch product in, plop in a cotton t-shirt for ~30 min, then air dry(my hair usually air dries within a few hours or less)
• SOTC with a bit of jojoba oil
I do not have a curl defining brush, and I do sleep in a bonnet every night.
The mirror photo is my hair 1st day hair after washday.
Thank you for any help!!!

Advice on making my curls look better?

Here’s my natural hair! I go to the gym so I was my hair every single day (I know it’s a crime 😭) but I sweat really bad and it breaks my face out if I don’t daily wash. Here’s my current routine:

  1. Wash: OGX argan oil of Morocco shampoo and conditioner, conditioner sits for about 5-8 minutes

  2. After shower: Moroccan oil curl defining cream applied throughout wet hair

  3. Towel dry/air dry with a scrunch

  4. Sleep!

  5. Wake up, brush hair, apply Moroccan oil treatment hair oil rubbed in thoroughly, water spray bottle all over, scrunch and let air dry!!

(I dye my hair chunky blonde icy highlights once every 6 months, I never use heat. I also used to use Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner “curly hair” kind, but it got really expensive so I switched.)

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE OPEN TO ANY AND ALL FEEDBACK 🩷

Curlygirl method on 3-a curls

It definitely worked on my effort to have more natural definition \^

Routine:

  1. Co-wash using Palmolive Naturals Neutro (Limpeza Balanceada)

  2. With the hair soaking wet, apply Leave-In Kolene Danos Extremos using praying hands followed by gel

  3. Hover diffuse until gel cast form and then leave to air dry until 100%

  4. With the hair dry I scrunch it gently
