Is this level of communication from my workers' comp attorney normal?

I'm hoping to get some advice because I'm not sure if what I'm experiencing is normal.

I suffered a work-related back injury and spent months trying conservative treatment first. I completed physical therapy, tried medications, and underwent multiple injections, but none of it provided lasting relief. Because those treatments failed, I ultimately had lumbar spine surgery.

I had my QME on May 14, 2026. During the evaluation, the QME made comments that left me feeling optimistic about my case, but I've been waiting for the written report ever since.

My biggest concern right now is my attorney's communication. Over the past several weeks, I've called, emailed, and texted multiple times asking for updates. The only response I received was that they were "waiting on the doctor's workload." Since then, I haven't received any meaningful communication, and I still don't know whether they've even received my QME report.

I already changed attorneys once earlier in this claim, so I'm very reluctant to switch again. At the same time, after everything I've been through, failed conservative treatment, surgery, and now waiting on my QME. It feels like my case has stalled, and I'm left completely in the dark.

For those who have gone through the California workers' comp system:

  • Is this level of communication from an attorney typical?
  • How long did it take to receive your QME report after the evaluation?
  • At what point would you start considering a change in representation?

I'm not looking to discuss or name specific attorneys publicly, in accordance with the subreddit rules. If anyone has personal experience, guidance, or is willing to share suggestions privately, please feel free to send me a DM.

Thank you.

28 Years Old, Have $25,000 Available, Bad Credit, Trying to Build Wealth... What Would You Do?

I'm 28 years old and currently have about $25,000 available.

My credit score is around 450 due to mistakes I made in my early 20s. I have several old debts that are currently being resolved and the total amount needed to clear everything is approximately $6,000–$7,000.

I currently earn roughly $55,000–$65,000 annually depending on overtime and bonuses.

My goals over the next 3–5 years are:

  • Rebuild my credit
  • Become debt free
  • Build an emergency fund
  • Start investing for retirement
  • Purchase a newer vehicle
  • Eventually become a homeowner

My tentative plan is:

  • Pay off all remaining debt
  • Put $5,000 into a high-yield savings account
  • Keep $5,000 accessible as a cash buffer
  • Begin contributing to a Roth IRA

Additional context:

  • I live in Southern California.
  • No children.
  • Stable employment.
  • No major investments currently.
  • Monthly Bills aside from Debt $800

If you were in my position, what would your priority order be?

Would you handle the debt first, increase the emergency fund, invest more aggressively, or save more cash?

Looking for honest opinions, especially from people who rebuilt their finances after having poor credit.

Workers Comp Case After Back Surgery - New Employer, QME Says Not at MMI Yet

Looking for some general advice from anyone who has been through a similar California workers' compensation case.

I suffered a lower back injury at work (repetitive duties 2025) that eventually led to a microdiscectomy at L4-L5/S1. Before surgery, I completed physical therapy, injections, chiropractic treatment, and other conservative care options.

Since the injury, I was terminated by my employer. I pursued a separate wrongful termination matter that has already been resolved and is no longer part of my workers' compensation claim. I have since obtained new employment and am currently working with accommodations my previous employer did not accomadate too.

I recently attended a QME evaluation that lasted approximately two hours. The QME indicated that I am not yet at Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) and recommended additional treatment. While I have improved since surgery, I still experience symptoms and limitations.

I have a few questions:

  1. If a QME finds that I am not yet at MMI, how much longer does the workers' compensation process typically continue before settlement discussions become serious?
  2. For those who underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy in California, what kind of Permanent Disability (PD) ratings did you receive?
  3. How much weight does ongoing treatment and future medical care carry when evaluating a settlement?
  4. Is there generally an advantage to keeping future medical treatment open versus accepting a Compromise & Release?
  5. Has anyone here had a similar injury and surgery while working for a new employer by the time their workers' comp case resolved?

I understand every case is different and settlement values vary based on many factors. I'm mainly looking for experiences from others who have been through a similar situation and any insight into what the next phase of the process might look like.

Thanks in advance.
