I Built a “Smart Camera” With Dirt-Cheap Parts

I wanted to see how far I could push one of those ridiculously cheap camera modules from AliExpress, so I made a small image-recognition setup using an OV7670, GMT130V1.0 LCD, and a YD-ESP32-S3. The ESP32-S3 handles the camera and image recognition, while the LCD shows what the system is seeing and processing.

Getting everything to work together took more time than I expected. The camera output, display, wiring, and processing all had to behave properly, and at some point I was just debugging why the camera was not showing the image I expected. But it’s finally working now. The camera captures the image, the system processes it, and the result shows up on the LCD. Pretty cool that this ended up as a small standalone vision system using such cheap hardware.
