Sprints & Jumps Coach taking over HS XC Team

I’m mainly a Sprints, Mid Distance & Jumps Coach taking over HS XC Team. I have a pretty good grasp on training and planning. I just have two main questions; what’s common race strategy for the 5k? Running by mile splits or kilometer splits? Even splits? It is similar to the mile how the first and last parts are faster than the middle? Also what are reasonable PB goals? Like 20 to 30s?

For reference the boys returning team is averaging 18:30 and girls 22:45. Over the last few years there have Boys run 40mpw and Girls run 25mpw. Majority of is aerobic conditioning. They’ve never really worked lactate threshold or VO2 max. I plan to keep the mileage the same or a bit lower to add in threshold and V02 work responsibly.

Anything helps. Thanks in advance.

Changing the wind standards for School Record Book

Thinking about changing the wind standards for my schools record book from +2.0 or less to +2.5 or +2.9. Disclaimer: if I make the change nobody losses their records. In fact, the top 10 all time stays the same only a few records get faster.

Obviously I know for official record books all time must be FAT and +2.0 or less wind. But we’re not NFHS, NCAA or IAAF. It’s just a high school record book that exists only in my Google Sheets and soon a poster under the score board.

Main reason I’m thinking of making the change to 2.5 is because our current school girls 100h record holder ran 14.94 (-1.3) at regionals but in the State Meet this year ran 14.46 (+2.2) in the rain. She’s a Senior Captain it feels wrong to take the away because she’s 0.2 over.

I’ve already decided to remove the wind limit for jumps because so that a three time State silver medalist could keep her school records (both long and triple have no wind reading) because 20+ years ago wind gauges at a jump pit wasn’t common practice.

Just wondering if any coaches have done something similar or if you even account for wind in your school records. I’m leaning toward 2.5 tho. 2.9 feels egregious.

Edit: Thank You for your overwhelming disagreement. This idea was proposed to me. I’m not in favor of changing the wind limit. Only thing I’m considering is trying to find a record poster that has spots for all conditions best.
