Should I move back to India after 2 years of struggling to find a full-time job in the US?

I’m in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some perspective from people who have been in a similar situation.

I’ve been trying to find a full-time role in the US since completing my Master’s, and it’s been almost two years now. I did eventually land a contract role that I genuinely loved, but unfortunately, the position was eliminated as part of mass layoffs.

Since then, the uncertainty around finding another role has started affecting me significantly. The constant job searching, applications, interviews, financial pressure, and uncertainty about the future have taken a toll on my mental and overall well-being. I kept telling myself that I just needed to work harder, be more patient, and keep going, but I feel like I’ve reached a point where the situation is affecting my health and quality of life.

I’m now seriously considering moving back to India and continuing my career there. I’ve been getting multiple signs that maybe it’s time to stop forcing things and choose a path that gives me some stability and allows me to take care of myself.

At the same time, moving back after investing so much time, money, and effort into building a life and career in the US feels like a huge decision. There’s also a part of me that worries I might regret leaving or wonder whether I should have tried a little longer.

For anyone who has been in a similar situation:

  • How did you know it was time to move back?
  • Did moving back feel like giving up at the time?
  • How did your career progress after returning to India?
  • Do you think I should give the US job search more time, or prioritize stability and my well-being at this point?

I’m not necessarily looking for someone to make the decision for me. I’d just really value hearing honest experiences from people who have gone through something similar ❤️

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to share their perspective.

Data Engineer / BI Engineer | 3+ YOE | Amazon US Experience | Available Sept 2026 | Seeking Referrals

Hi everyone, I’m currently looking for Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, and Analytics opportunities in India as I am planning to move back due to job uncertainty and personal health issues. I’m available to join from September 2026.

A little about my background:

  • 3+ years of experience in Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, and automation
  • Previous experience as a Business Intelligence & Data Engineer at Whole Foods Market (Amazon Grocery) in the US
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, SQL, Spark/PySpark, Python, Redshift, Glue, Lambda, Synapse, dbt, Airflow, Tableau, Power BI, and QuickSight
  • Experience building ETL pipelines, data warehouses, data marts, dashboards, reporting solutions, and data quality processes
  • Previous experience at BCG and Capgemini

I’m primarily looking for opportunities around ₹20 LPA+ due to my experience and educational loan commitments, but I’m open to discussing compensation based on the role and opportunity.

If you’re hiring for Data Engineer, BI Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or related positions, or know of a relevant opportunity where referrals are open, I’d really appreciate it if you could reach out.

Please feel free to comment or DM me, and I’ll share my resume.

With my experience at Amazon/Whole Foods in the US, along with my background in AWS, Azure, data engineering, and BI, I believe I can bring a lot to the table and contribute meaningfully to a team.

These are difficult and uncertain times for many of us. If we can help each other by sharing opportunities, referrals, or simply pointing someone in the right direction, I’d love to be part of that.

If my profile is relevant to your team, please feel free to reach out. And if I can help someone else in return, I’ll do my best to pay it forward. 🙏

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read, share, refer, or help connect me with the right opportunity.

Moving from US to India – Data Engineering / BI job market + interview difficulty?

Hey folks,

I’m currently based in the US and planning to move back to India soon. I have \~3 years of experience in Data Engineering and BI, and have worked with companies like Amazon, BCG, and Capgemini.

I’ve started applying to roles in India (mostly via LinkedIn), but haven’t seen much traction yet. To be fair, I haven’t been super consistent or fully focused with applications so far, but it made me curious about how the market actually is right now.

A few things I’m trying to understand:

* How difficult is it currently to land interview calls in India for data engineering / BI roles?
* Does applying via LinkedIn actually work, or are referrals almost necessary?
* What strategies work best for the Indian job market (platforms, networking, etc.)?
* How important is tailoring resumes vs applying in volume?

Also, I’d love to understand more about the interview side:

* What does the interview process typically look like for data engineering / BI roles in India?
* How difficult are the interviews compared to the US?
* What kind of topics are heavily focused on (SQL, system design, coding, case studies, etc.)?
* Are companies expecting strong DSA skills even for data-focused roles?

Another thing I’m curious about:

* Has anyone here transitioned from a US master’s / US work experience back to India?
* Did that background help in getting better roles or compensation, or not as much as expected?

Would really appreciate insights from folks who’ve recently gone through the process or are currently hiring in this space.

Thanks in advance!
