[System Agnostic] VS screen module for Foundry VTT

A little while ago, I posted here on Reddit asking about fighting-game-style VS screens in Foundry, and people gave me a bunch of cool ideas.

After thinking about it for a bit, I realized: “Yeah, this could actually make a pretty neat module.”

So I made one.

I mostly built it because I couldn’t find anything that really filled this niche the way I wanted. For now, I’m keeping it as system-agnostic as possible, so it should be usable in different kinds of games and setups.

EDIT: I made a small update to the module with new animations, like the characters gently breathing, and new features, such as being able to open their sheets directly from their cards (Also, I got rid of the blurred background when there’s no one there). https://imgur.com/j20Y4tl

[System Agnostic] Fighting Game-Style VS / Character Select Overlay for Combat in Foundry VTT

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on how to translate the aesthetic of fighting game loading screens / character select screens into Foundry VTT.

I attached a few reference images to show the kind of thing I mean: a dramatic “VS” layout, with allied characters on one side and enemies on the other, similar to a fighting game or team battle screen.

What I’m imagining is something that appears over the scene when combat starts, almost like an overlay or splash screen. It would stay visible during the fight, not just appear for a few seconds. Ideally, it would remain on screen until the combat ends.

The basic idea would be:

Allied characters on the left
Enemy characters on the right
A big VS / battle-style layout in the middle
Character portraits or splash art for each combatant
Defeated enemies could become greyed out, crossed out, hidden, or visually marked in some way
The overlay would disappear once the fight is over

I know this might be difficult or maybe impossible without a custom module, but I thought it was worth sharing the idea here. I’m open to suggestions on how this could be done.

Would this be possible with existing modules, macros, Monk’s Active Tile Triggers, Sequencer, Token Magic FX, or something similar? Or would this probably require a dedicated module?

Any advice, module recommendations, or examples of similar setups would be appreciated.

I'm planning a campaign without a grid or traditional battle maps in Foundry VTT. I'll be using the Avatar Legends system, but I'm looking for something mostly system-agnostic, so general suggestions are welcome too.

My initial idea is to represent combat more like a fighting game loading screen: the player characters on one side, the enemies on the opposite side, facing each other, without necessarily having a big “VS” in the middle. The goal isn’t to track exact positioning, movement, or distances, but to create a visual scene that supports a more cinematic/narrative fight.

How do you handle narrative combat in Foundry without a battle map?

If possible, I’d also really appreciate module recommendations that support this kind of setup.
