The watchmen HBO show seems pretty interesting and I'd like to watch it but I know it follows the comic book. My question is do I need to read it before the show, are there additional comics that I should read to get a better understanding of the show?
I have just finished reading the chip zdarsky run and loved it. I want to continue reading daredevil comics and I've decided to go back to the Brian Michael bendis run. But I noticed that it starts in daredevil #16 so my question is what comes before that? I think it's guardian devil and then parts of a hole but it's not exactly clear. There's also daredevil yellow which seems to be a self contained story. I also have cold day in hell and Frank miller's man without fear so if there's any recommendations for one off storylines worth reading I'll take a look at those too.
This community seems to share my utter discontent with daredevil born again so I thought I'd share this little analysis of the red hook plotline I frustratingly wrote in response to marvel consumers.
I just wanted to properly analyze the problems regarding the red hook sequence in season 2 episode 3 and some of episode 4 as well.
The entire threat of red hook port is made obsolete by the red hook sequence in the end of episode 3, heres why:
For the first three episodes of season 2 (which happens six months after season 1 btw), we are supposed to believe red hook is an impenetrable fortress that is completely out of bounds for matt. The place is guarded by AVTF units 24/7, there is absolutely no way matt could get in there and or even get close to be in hearing range of the hostages. So that means matt can't get inside, he can't get any evidence of illegal activity, and unless backed up by an army (as they state in season 1 episode 9), red hook is a dead end. Which would make matt's raid on the Northstar completely justifiable.
However, in season 2 episode 3 we are shown that not only can matt get on the rooftop of the main red hook wherehouse undetected, but he can do so without any effort(evident by his clear lack of any signs of struggle during the sneaking in scene). After we see him easily sneak in he jumps through a broken roof window (which was somehow broken in a newly built building), walks down a few stairs, opens the door with the keycard given to him, then about 20 meters away from the room he just opened, there are the prisoners but of course up until matt is centimeters away from the door, he can't hear them even tho they are all banging on the cage (entirely unprompted btw. Are these guys all been doing it every day for the past 6 months now?).
This presents several issues:
If matt could've always just go through the port undetected, why didn't he do it for the past 6 months? He should have been there every night, spying on the cargo being unloaded, and scanning the entire building from the rooftop(like he does with Midland circle in defenders, and the entire block surrounding the church when he's looking for bullseye in the very next episode).
Even if for some unknown reason matt never scouted red hook How the hell didn't he hear the people in the cages once he was on that rooftop? He already knows jack duqane is being held there so why is he not scanning the building to locate him?.
Bonus question: After matt finds the people in the cages, his immediate course of action is to free all of them while surrounded by 17-19 AVTF officers(I counted)? which also begs the question, why is this place so thinly guarded and why was matt so afraid of it then?
So instead of leaving the people in the cages, taking out the entire camp silently or maybe taking evidence, retreating and maybe getting Jessica Jones or literally anyone to help him safely release the prisoners, he lets all of them out, immediately endangering them and putting them in the line of fire, hoping the guards won't decide to shoot everyone to avoid the catastrophic implications of the prisoners getting out(which they do almost immediately). He also had no way of getting them out since he knew the outside was still guarded and he had no idea about Karen and the ayela girl coming with the truck. Great plan daredevil.
So after matt, by pure plot bullshitery gets everyone safely onto the truck, he goes with Karen in a separate car in a separate direction? Surely the three standing AVTF officers left standing,including Powell, who is the top dog of the AVTF would call for all units to block major roads and surround the massive stolen armoured truck that is literally being tracked 24/7 and stop the prisoners from escaping right? Nope. Powell just calls fisk and then they.. blow up the Northstar? They claim it was daredevil and swordsman but like, why do that if you didn't want to divert attention to the docks so that your men could freely pursuit the truck? Blowing up the ship to make vigilantes look worse won't do anything because fisk doesn't use it to his advantage. He doesn't preform city wide AVTF sweeps to find the terrorists, he doesn't invoke any new policies,i mean, I guess the AVTF goes to kirstan's office but they don't even take her captive to interrogate her so what's the point? he just decides it's time for a boxing match. Even if he didn't want to make a commotion, what's to stop an AVTF unit from tailing the truck(using the built in tracking chip every police vehicle made in America has) and Just ambush them at a safehouse? So yeah, maybe that whole sequence looked cool, but it lacked logic in every turn.
Now, in my opinion, these kind of things happen almost every episode in born again. But this time I just wanted to focus on this one thing that bugged me. I'm so glad now that the season is over and people can't say "this will be explained in the next episode", I can go through this seasons many, many flaws
