My honest take on gaming on cosmic (1.5.0)

I recently decided to give cosmic another ago after some time, I saw some improvements but not much overall unfortunately.

Before I start, I'm been using linux for the past 10 years so I know a little of how to handle or search certain issues.

I been tracking cosmic development since it entered beta, and started to watch it more closely since pointer constraints protocol was implemented in epoch 1.0.5.

So now we are in epoch 1.1.5 what change for gamers? Not much, there were improvements but not the ones I was expecting.

If a new user switches from windows or decides to try cosmic in another distro it's not going to be a pleasant experience.

Here's a few games that requires changes to work properly in cosmic

  • Team Fortress 2 - Needs SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland %command% to launch and native wayland breaks the steam overlay;
  • Dead by Daylight - PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command%, break the steam overlay;
  • Oblivion Remastered - PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command%, breaks the steam overlay;
  • Insurgency Sandstorm - PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command%, breaks the steam overlay;

Just a few examples I'm sure there are many, but a new user expects to install steam and launch the game, not to have to tinker to enable variables for games to work and loose other features, and there are other instances that the mouse doesn't even work in certain games.

I feel that this in the long term might hurt cosmic and that's why I'm making this post, hopefully to bring this issue to the spotlight for the devs and contributors.

I really love cosmic and every now and then I logout of my plasma sessions to test and see the improvements but until it is as seamless has plasma in the game compatibility, it's still a no go to the majority of people.

Keep up the good work and if you can please improve XWayland compatibility so we have more people moving to cosmic.

How do you limit your fps in steam without using mangoHUD?

Now with the recent release of GE-Proton11-1 DXVK_FRAME_RATE=90 %command% no longer works, I always like this feature so I could save on power and generate less heat but now it's gone for some reason.

Is there another way to limit the fps or do I need to use an older version such as GE-Proton10-34?
