An incident at Auchan supermarket

At one of Auchan shops on Avenida Almirante Reis in Lisbon, I was approached by the security guy inside the supermarket. He commented, disapprovingly, on my appearance/outfit. When I dismissed his comments, he continued in the same vein, accompanied by what appeared to be one of the workers or managers of the shop (a woman).

This is going to stay with me as one of the highlights of visiting Lisbon (and Portugal). My best guess is that it might have to do with this "Fight Tourism" trend? Or part of the hard right inspired backlash against "diversity"?

Dress "codes" in public

Hi guys, why do you think the public still is so sensitive to certain clothing items on men, such as leggings and legging shorts?

What I liked as a middle aged man: recent mystery, soap, sci fi

"Family crime" / gang drama:

Bandi: fresh and witty, also sentimental in an interesting way, and beautifully shot. Rating: 8 (out of 10)

Secrets we keep: quietly suspenseful, socially relevant. Rally good acting. Rating: 8.

The Gardener: I would call it neo-Hitchcockian. I liked how the motif of the harden and plants ties it all. Rating: 8.

Copenhagen Cowboy: very niche, but so much fun (and tragic at the same time): best to see it as a revenge drama, even comedy or satire. Socially relevant. Rating: 8.

Wayward [2025]: an interesting atmosphere and tone of narration: at times feels like a game or dream. I would call it innovative to some extent. Good visuals. Rating: 7 (leaning towards 8).

Sci fi:

Bodies: I hate explicit sci fi, but this one kept me watching. An interesting concept and script overall, also visually. Rating: 7.

Archive81: I hate explicit horror, but this one kept me immersed. I liked how they played with the idea of all sorts of mediated experience, the visual media. Felt Lynchian at times (David Lynch-ian).

Soap:

High Tides: trashy at times, but a consistent vibe overall. Rating: between 6 and 7. New season coming soon

Between Father and Son: extremely trashy, but cut into very short episodes. Satisfies the need and nostalgia for telenovella-style soap. I would call it innovative. Rating: 6

A would-be series

The Tearsmith (a film): an interesting idea: to provide the main character with some supernatural flair, to only give it a natural explanation later. A good concept for a series. Also, I liked the actor.

iPad browser watching is better quality than in app?

I've tried watching Netflix on iPad both via a browser and in the Netflix "native" app. In my experience, the app turns down the resolution (a bit) (in the settings, the best options is termed "better quality", which immediately sounds suspicious). Why would they do this? Do they think app users are somehow inferior?
