Who wants to hangout?

I arrived in Lisbon 2 days ago and looking for some company. I’m going to Sintra tomorrow but afterwards I’m free to do whatever! Things on my list right now are the Christ statue, Padrão dos Descobrimentos and MAAT museum, and probably hit a beach or a beach club (i don’t know what else is there), Also down for casual hangouts and drinks or partying cause why not.

I haven’t booked a return flight yet but if I stay until Saturday then I’ll attend the Solomun show.
I’m 27 male (and gay) if it concerns anyone.

Free car seats

Hello
Me and the family are finishing up our trip to Portugal this week. We decided to buy car seats for the duration of our trip, since it cost a fortune through the rental company and the quality often isn’t the best. We’re leaving on the 20th of August. So if anyone with 2 kids are flying in to Lisbon the 20th of August before 10 o’clock, we’ve got two car seats we’re not bringing home. They have iso fix and only been used for 3 weeks. Fits kids 2,5yr and up.
Hit me up, if you could use some free car seats.

Sintra proposal question

I’m traveling to Lisbon and Porto in October and wanted to propose to gf at Quinta da Regaleira. I want to have a totally private location or lookout, is that possible there? Does anyone have a better location? Should I call ahead and reserve something?

Benfica tickets from Stubhub

Hi everyone,
My husband and I are headed to Lisbon on September 6 and one of his dreams is to watch a Benfica game. They are scheduled to play on September 13 and I’d love to surprise him with tickets for his 40th birthday. I don’t see tickets available through the official Benfica site yet but see a lot of options on Stubhub. I have used Stubhub for local events in the past but never for any international events. Is it legitimate for Benfica games? I’d hate to purchase and get to the stadium only to be turned away but I also understand how limited ticket availability is when sales are open to the public from the official site.
Has anyone used Stubhub for a Benfica game before? Or if anyone has any advice? Thanks!

Lisbon + Costa da Caparica - where to stay and what would you recommend?

Hi! We’re visiting Lisbon from September 11th to 18th.

We arrive Friday evening and plan to stay 3 nights in Costa da Caparica, mainly because I want to take a few beginner surf lessons. Then on Monday morning we’ll move to Lisbon for the rest of the trip.

We’re not into nightlife, bars or drinking. We’d much rather wake up early, explore during the day, enjoy nature, nice views, good food and quieter/local places.

A few things I’d love advice on:

  • Is spending the whole weekend in Costa da Caparica a good idea, or would you move to Lisbon already on Sunday?
  • Which surf school in Costa da Caparica would you recommend for beginner group lessons?
  • Which area of Lisbon should we stay in from Monday to Friday? We want somewhere quiet at night, reasonably priced and with good public transport.
  • Any good, affordable local restaurants, bakeries, pizza places or other food spots?
  • Any less touristy neighbourhoods or places worth seeing?
  • Any nice cliffs, coastal walks, viewpoints or nature trips accessible without a car?
  • I also train BJJ and would like to visit 2-3 gyms - any recommendations for drop-ins?

We’re travelling on a budget and won’t have a car.

Thanks!

Signed an offer abroad, never resigned from my current job, missed my start date, and now I think I lost the opportunity. Is there anything I can realistically do?

I wrote this with the help of AI

I’m looking for some outside perspective because I’ve been stuck in my own head about this for months, and I handled the situation badly.

I currently work in France for a well-known IT/consulting company, on a fairly prestigious public-sector technology assignment.

My situation here is objectively very comfortable. I have a good name on my CV, the work is useful for my career, I live close to my family and friends, and my housing costs are extremely low. The compensation is good for my situation as well, so money was not really the deciding factor between the two opportunities.

A few months after starting this position, I was contacted by a large international company about an internal technical position in another European country.

The new role appealed to me much more professionally.
It would mean:
Moving from consulting to an internal position.
Working in a technical field that interests me more.
Joining a large international group where I could potentially develop internally and move up over time.
Living abroad for the first time.
Moving to a city I really like.

The compensation was also attractive, but I don’t want to give exact numbers because I want to keep this anonymous. Financially, neither option was so obviously better that it made the decision for me.
The problem was that I was extremely conflicted.
On one side, I had a comfortable life in France, family, friends, almost no housing expenses, and a prestigious current role.

On the other side, moving abroad felt like an adventure and probably the more exciting long-term career move.

There was another factor: when the new company originally contacted me, I had only been in my current role for a short period of time. I wanted to stay long enough for the experience to actually mean something on my CV rather than leaving almost immediately after joining.

So I kept hesitating.
Eventually, a few months ago, I accepted the offer and signed the employment contract.
The agreed starting date was in mid-August.
Here is where I seriously messed up.
In France, I have a roughly three-month notice period with my current employer.
Despite signing the new contract, I never actually resigned from my current job.

For months I kept going back and forth:
“Do I really leave this comfortable situation?”
“Do I move abroad?”
“Is the new internal role worth giving everything here up?”
“Should I stay longer so my current experience looks better on my CV?”
I kept thinking I would eventually become certain.
I never did.

As the start date got closer, I raised the possibility with the new company that I might need to start later.

At the same time, I was speaking with my current employer and trying to understand whether I could shorten my notice period.
But I still didn’t clearly tell the new company early enough that the fundamental problem was: **I had never resigned, therefore I could not realistically be available on the agreed start date.**

The start date arrived.
I did not show up.
The manager who had hired me had apparently even traveled to the new location partly to be there for my onboarding.
I feel terrible about that part.

I spoke with him afterward and told him the truth: I had not resigned, I had been incredibly hesitant about the move, and I had handled the situation badly.

He was understandably frustrated, but surprisingly he initially seemed willing to see whether something could still be worked out.

Around midday he scheduled a 30-minute meeting for the following morning between me, himself and a senior manager in the organization.
His email said they wanted to discuss the onboarding issue, understand the impact, look at possible dates and align on next steps.
He also said he would send me a separate email asking for a formal written commitment from my side regarding my availability.
That separate email was never sent.

About six hours later, I received another message from the manager saying that, after alignment with HR and their previous formal “no show” communication, they were cancelling the meeting.
The message basically ended by wishing me the best in my professional career.

So my interpretation is that the manager initially tried to find a solution, then HR or another decision-maker reviewed the situation and decided not to continue.

The next morning I sent them an apology.
I acknowledged that I had not been transparent enough, took full responsibility, admitted that my actions did not reflect the commitment I had made, explained that I had failed to resign early enough to complete my notice period, and apologized to everyone who had invested time in preparing for my arrival.

I also told them that I had now made my decision, that the uncertainties were resolved, that I genuinely wanted to join, and that if they were willing to reconsider I was ready to provide a clear and realistic availability date.
I made it explicit that I understood rebuilding their confidence in me would be my responsibility.
So far I haven’t received a response.

The frustrating part is that now that the opportunity may actually be gone, I realize how much I had projected myself into that life.

I had imagined living abroad, better weather, being close to the coast, building a new life, working internally instead of consulting, and developing my career inside a large international company.
If they called me now and said, “We are willing to reconsider, but we need a definitive answer: are you coming?”, my answer would be yes.
That certainty came far too late.

I know I screwed up. I’m not looking for people to tell me that the company was unreasonable. From their perspective, I signed a contract, committed to a start date and then didn’t show up because I had never resigned from my existing position. I understand why that destroys trust.

What I’m trying to figure out is what I should realistically do **now**.
Would you:

\- Leave the apology email alone and wait?
\- Follow up after a couple of business days if there is no response?
\- Call the hiring manager, since he initially seemed willing to find a solution?
\- Assume the opportunity is dead and move on?
\- Resign from the current position anyway because this whole situation has made it clear that I actually want to leave and try living abroad?
\- Absolutely not resign unless/until the new company formally reopens the offer?
\- And for anyone who works in HR/recruitment: once someone is formally marked as a first-day no-show, - is there realistically any chance of reversing that internally if the hiring manager still wants the person?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have either been in a similar situation or dealt with something like this as a hiring manager/recruiter.

I know the obvious lesson is that by refusing to make a difficult decision, I eventually allowed the decision to be made for me.

I’m trying to figure out what the smartest next move is without making another impulsive mistake.

**TL;DR:** I signed a job offer abroad but never resigned from my current job because I kept hesitating. I missed the agreed start date, the company cancelled onboarding after HR got involved, and I’ve since apologized and asked them to reconsider. Now I realize I actually wanted the move and don’t know whether to wait, follow up, or move on.

Im 22yo and im homeless

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes.
I work in Lisbon, but until recently I was renting a room on the south bank of the Tagus. I had a disagreement with one of the people I was sharing the house with. The next day, the landlord told me I had 30 days to move out, and mentioned that this person was his nephew.
Up to this point, it’s unpleasant, but these things happen. The atmosphere in the house became tense, and naturally, this person and I stopped speaking to each other.
When the landlord came to collect the rent, he told me that he had received further complaints about me “creating a bad atmosphere” and that, because of this, I had to leave that same day.
This happened on the 2nd. I managed to rent a tiny storage space (around 1 m²) to keep my belongings, but I couldn’t find another room on such short notice, and I don’t have any savings to pay for a temporary solution.
Since then, I’ve been sleeping on the streets. One of the places where I had been sleeping, behind a shopping centre, is no longer an option because I was approached by security and told I couldn’t sleep there anymore.
Over the last four days, I’ve slept approximately six hours in total. I’m completely exhausted — if I sit down or stay still for any length of time, I fall asleep, and I’ve even started nodding off while standing. It’s already affecting my work, which is particularly worrying because I’m in the final month of my contract and I need my boss to want to renew it.
Right now, what I need most is somewhere safe to sleep and shower for a few days while I look for a room. I’m working and trying to sort this situation out, but at the moment I simply don’t have the money to pay for an emergency solution.
If anyone knows of temporary rooms, emergency accommodation, charities or organisations that could help, or simply has any advice on where I can go in Lisbon or the surrounding area, I would be incredibly grateful.
I can also provide proof of employment/my contract and references if necessary.
Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this.

Safe parking north of Lisbon? P+R

Hi! I’m driving from Lagos to Lisbon in September and will stay in the city for 4 days. I don’t want to park the car in central Lisbon, so I’m looking for a safe and reasonably priced parking garage north of the city. Ideally, it should be easy to reach from the south and convenient to get back on the road towards Nazaré afterwards. Good public transport connections to central Lisbon would be a big plus. Any recommendations?

An incident at Auchan supermarket

At one of Auchan shops on Avenida Almirante Reis in Lisbon, I was approached by the security guy inside the supermarket. He commented, disapprovingly, on my appearance/outfit. When I dismissed his comments, he continued in the same vein, accompanied by what appeared to be one of the workers or managers of the shop (a woman).

This is going to stay with me as one of the highlights of visiting Lisbon (and Portugal). My best guess is that it might have to do with this "Fight Tourism" trend? Or part of the hard right inspired backlash against "diversity"?

How would you react/respond?

Living in Lisbon as an expat?

Hi everyone!

I just got two PhD offers, one in Lisbon, Portugal, and one in Stavanger, Norway. Although I am so happy to finally have a way out of unemployment, I honestly can’t decide which one to take.

The biggest difference is obviously the wage: Portugal is around €1400, while Norway is around €4500. I have always wanted to live in Portugal, but my family has no way of supporting me, so the money in Norway is very tempting.

I wanted to ask if anyone can give me some advice on this; do you think 1400 is liveable in Lisbon? I have always wanted to live in Portugal, and it is basically a dream come true at this point, but I’m afraid I will not be able to sustain myself financially.

I’d love to hear your experiences and opinions!

Cheers

Taxi Ripoff from Airport - be careful

I was charged 40 euro - I gave the woman a 5 euro tip - from the Airport. I learned at reception is should be 8 euro in total. The driver gave me a big story about loosing her job and not she was trying this as a profession and she was worried about her safety but she was just scamming me. Im usually on to these things but was tired and just wanted to get to the hotel.

Apparently this is a well known scam.

Apparently, this is common, a nice welcome to Portugal, so be careful.

How do you these souvenir shops stay open?

I was in Lisbon for a wedding then Porto afterward in May. One thing I noticed is that there are so many souvenir shops.

However, the mostly seemed empty, even on weekends. How do they stay open? I felt like no tourists ever went in and bought tchotchkes.

Restaurant recommendations for celebrating an anniversary.

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a wine bar that offers charcuterie style snacks or small plates and I'm looking for place to get decent nice steak dinner, preferably somewhere with a nice atmosphere as I'll be celebrating an anniversary with my partner while in Lisbon.

I'm trying to avoid touristy places/places featured a lot on social media and more interested in local restaurants but open to any suggestions.

We'll be visiting from Monday 14th September - Saturday 19th, any info on whether a reservation is needed would also be helpful.

Thanks!

Clean up activities - Lisbon area

Hi all!

I have been thinking of organising a small clean-up in Lisbon, like a group of people meeting on a Saturday/Sunday morning with gloves and bags to pick up litter in one spot and actually make a visible difference.

The idea is to spend about an hour cleaning up, see what we can achieve and maybe grab a coffee or bite to eat afterwards. Everyone brings their own gloves / bags and no commitment beyond showing up.

Before organising I just wanted to check few things:

  1. Is anyone interested? Even just a bunch of people would be enough to get started
  2. Do you know a specific area that needs it most? I'm thinking somewhere along the river or near the coast, but open to suggestions liek parks, beaches, urban spots, anything
  3. Does anyone have experience coordinating with the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa for this kind of thing? I was thinking that the bags disposal may be an issue

Drop a comment or DM me if you're in or have a spot in mind :)))
