Been awhile. But it’s finally back.

New cylinder heads, timing belt, spark plugs, lifters, gaskets, Ect.

Took a bit longer than I would’ve liked but back on the road running like a dream.

Some of it was preventative maintenance but I’d rather pay a bit extra now so it runs a whole lot longer.

And take better care of it than the previous owner who sold it with warped heads xD

Every baseline cosmetic

Saw this in the wild today. It’s not EGREGIOUS but smoked taillights, wing, vortex generators, black painted hood + gas tank cover, window stickers, so on…. On a VW grocery getter.

Idk man. You do you I guess

Defeated but also Reinvigorated

Hi! Me again. So after the sneaky head gasket leak with only a singular symptom. Decided, alright let’s get this somewhere and tear it apart. Well, I received these photos back. Evidently the heads are actually warped….

Bear in mind. It wasn’t overheating nor blowing white smoke while in my month of ownership.

But running theory is. Prev owner either modded then returned to stock after abusing this poor car. Or just overheated it more than once. Hid what they could and it was sold without checking. Changed hands. Found me eventually and here we are

I’m shocked I drove 1700 miles with it and didn’t have the thing blow up on me.

So. New repair list: right valve cover leak (initial oil leak discovery). Tensioner, timing belt, and spark plugs (due to be replaced anyway as it’s near 100k miles) power steering pump. (Small leak found. Might as well fix now). Turbo feed line (optional but hey might as well get the upgraded lines since we are here) And cylinder head assembly assuming the warp is unrepairable.

Tbh this cars everywhere else is in beautiful condition. And has quite an extensive positive service history. So it’s just these internals that got decimated. We ball. Gonna get this thing back up to 100%. I’m determined at this point.

Figured I’d fluid service while waiting for head gasket repair appointment

And of COURSE the transmission fill plugs stripped. Still got the thing out but…. That was frustrating. New plug acquired tho so it’s all good

Welp yesterdays fear and today’s test confirmed the worst

Welp. Guess that’s that. Cheaper to fix than to get another car tho so…. We ball I suppose

1700 miles driven since I’ve gotten it. Who knows how long it’s been like this tho

Especially since there are NO other visible signs of said gasket leak. Oh well

Edit. (The sign that made me do this test was bubbles coming from radiator slowly, with cap off)

Well that’s not ideal

Extra info:

no white smoke out the exhaust.

Coolant reservoir level has increased over the last 100 miles.

Coolant and oil are not mixing in either system (checked both individually)

Not overheating at all, even after extended driving or more aggressive throttle use.

Maintained a similar frequency of bubbles over the course of 10 minutes of idling. Though did slow down slightly over time.

Theory is an air leak or worst case scenario, a single symptom head gasket leak.

Any insights?

Ordered a 2015 Wrx Sti intercooler. Came from the dealership like this….

Small vent more than anything

Got home. Opened the box and was greeted to this… what I can only assume, is a sledgehammered intercooler. Thankfully, I called and they are sending another one free of charge and claiming out this one. But man that’s frustrating. My old intercooler broke so it was causing a boost leak.

So excited to put it on. Just to get this. Even if it would still “work”. The mount doesn’t even line up its caved far enough in. Guess the cars gonna sit another few days. Hope the next one isn’t borked too.
