Senators Success in 10 Year Jumps - the 6/7 theory of years and Sens success
Fellow Sens fans, I believe we are on the precipice of a historic Ottawa Senators season. The evidence is clear in the numbers, given that this upcoming season is the 2026-27 season, and the Sens are always at their best (relative) in 6/7 years
This story starts with the last time the Stanley Cup was won by a team in Ottawa was the 1926-1927 Stanley Cup, where the Ottawa Senators defeated the Boston Bruins with legendary players like Jack Adams and Frank Finnegan. The Sens won the best of 3 series in 4 games 2-0 as somehow ties still occurred in the playoffs
Fast forward 80 years, and the modern day Ottawa Senators are toiling. After finishing last in the standings in 1995-96 year prior and dealing with Alexei Yashin’s contract fallout from the aftermath of the 94-95 lockout, Jacques Martin is hired for the 1996-1997 season. Now this season was special because, for the first time in modern Sens history, they qualified for the playoffs. Does it matter it was the last day of the season? No absolutely not cause it was a massive achievement for one of the worst clubs in the league.
Another 10 year time skip and we hit the 2006-07 season Now, the Pizza line is rolling. With prime Alfredsson, Heatley, Spezza and Ray Emery in net (and Hasek in the rear view mirror) the Sens capped off a fairly up and down regular season with the first and only finals appearance in modern franchise history. And while the Ducks got the best of the Sens, it’s another step in favour of the 6/7 theory
Stay with me now as we skip forward to the 2016/17 season. After finishing second in the Atlantic, the Sens dispatched the Rangers (thank u JG Pageau) and the Bruins in the early rounds, they run up against the Penguins. No need to relive the heartbreak, but the Sens were one goal away from the finals and fell in double overtime. This team, with Bond villain Guy Boucher behind the bench and the magical exploits of Erik Karlsson stringing things together never really hit the same heights again
Fast forward to today, we’re about to enter another 6/7 year and the math bears out that we’re going far this year. Maybe Stanley Cup? Maybe Presidents Trophy? Who knows, but history is clear that this is a big year for Ottawa, and outside of 2016/17 it’s always been new heights reached
