Why did he change the line to “For the past year I’ve been driving through a town” and then keep “But hey, I’m living here every day”?

I’m from a tourist town and found the original line relatable. Why replace it with one that takes away the sense of place? Why make it less personal?

If the answer is to provide continuity for “There’s a killer in the backseat” then imo that’s a step back. It’s not relatable beyond it being a hackneyed trope.
