Whatever happened to Dibrugarh’s roads?
I happened to ride my bike through Jorhat’s Club Road today evening and the whole stretch is totally unrecognisable from how it was four years ago when I used to take this road often to Tocklai Tea Research Institute for my research work. They have done such a good job widening the road and installing yellow streetlights. At the same time I felt bad for Dibrugarh. Declaring it the “Second Capital” would mean nothing if public infrastructure is not enhanced. Dibrugarh seems to have lost its earlier character. Back in 2005, when I was a student of Class VII at DBS, and when Swachh Survekshan was not a thing, Dibrugarh was declared second after Golaghat as Assam’s cleanest town. Now, the reality of the town is for everyone to see. I just wish that there is a turnaround in Dibrugarh’s fortunes, or rather, misfortunes, in the foreseeable future.
