My son (12) really wants to fish, need advice on the equipment we already have.

This is long, but I'd be very grateful for some advice on what to do if anyone has the time.

My son has been very insistent for awhile that he really wants to fish. He tried it briefly last year at a camp with my husband's friends and his interest has continued. My husband is thoroughly a city boy so camping/fishing hasn't really been much of a thing for us at a family although I did a decent amount as a kid.

We're heading out on a camping trip next week and the campground has two small lakes. I've dragged the fishing stuff I've had/inherited since my trips as a child but it's been sitting in various storage rooms for 2+ decades at this point. I don't have a good handle on what exactly I'm even looking at as far as quality goes or what's most appropriate to have him begin with. Two of the rods are a bit shorter and I know they were what my sister and I used, but we were younger than he is now when we would have started with those so I don't know that he necessarily needs to be on something "kid sized".

He's autistic and has ADHD so either he's going to be permanently obsessed with fishing after this trip or never speak of it again (his current stance is this is the only thing he's doing every day of the trip until he catches at least 5 fish. There were also some strange ideas about keeping a couple as pets which I've made clear is not a thing....). Basically, I don't want to spend a lot of money augmenting the gear that's here already until I know which way he lands on this.

I know I'll need to replace the line itself, but I'm not sure which rod/reel is best to start him with. He's also left-handed and I'm not sure if I should just teach him how I was taught to cast or if I need to actually hunt down a left handed reel and get him to mirror me?

One of the lakes is stocked with rainbow trout and the other smallmouth bass. From what I've read so far I've suggested we start with the small mouth bass lake and if we're doing well with that try for the rainbow trout if he's willing to get up early before they're hiding deep in the lake. There are canoes we can rent, but I think that's beyond what I'll be comfortable safely teaching him simultaneously. My intention is that we'll be sticking to fishing from the shore.

Other than replacing the lines, is there a specific combo of rod/reel I should go with?

There are two identical of the smaller sets (only put one in the picture) and then two more larger reels, but one is missing the handle and I have no idea if that's worth trying to replace? There are five different types of rods.

As for tackle/lures... Mostly what's there is a bunch of fake worm-adjacent gummy plastic things that I'm assuming I can probably use as bait for the smallmouth bass? There are a bunch of other little loops and weight type things and a few extra hooks. I've also got the two larger guys with multiple hooks that look like little fish. The last picture is something one of my husband's friends gave us, but I'm not sure if those aren't more for fly fishing? They're not like anything I ever used. I think I need spoons for the trout?

Any advice that helps me keep this fun, manageable, and affordable would be super appreciated. Thanks!

Photos from Fight Ford Protest at Queen's Park on July 25th

Photos from the Queen's Park chapter of monthly Province wide Fight Ford Protests which took place on July 25th.

Speakers this time around were primarily split into two main subjects: the environment and labour. They included Laura Walton, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour; JP Hornick, President of OPSEU/SEFPO; Workers from Sistering, now on week 10 of their strike; Poet, author, and singer/songwriter Robert Priest performing "Show Us The Texts"; ClimateFast; Senior's for Climate Action Now; Democratic Socialists of Canada; Madison from Toronto Students Against Austerity; City Councilor candidate for University-Rosedale, Diana Yoon; Climate activist and recent high school graduate JJ; Jon Powell for FairVote.ca; Fight Ford Queen's Park Organiser Bonnie Powell; Canadian Voice of Women for Peace; the Revolutionary Communist Party; and other concerned members of our community. (I apologise for any names I have missed or gotten incorrect.)

The ongoing wildfires and the woefully unprepared, uncaring response from our Provincial representatives was high on everyone's mind and a subject most speakers touched on in some capacity. Also of clear importance was the disdain workers in this province feel our government has for them. No group better to speak to that currently than the wonderful workers of OPSEU who are on their 10th week of strike action requesting the $6.5M of back pay a court has already ruled they are owed and better funding for the vulnerable members of our community which they have dedicated their professional lives to.

I am also continually impressed by the youngest members of our community who are showing up in increasing numbers to talk about cuts to OSAP (and education in general), and destruction of the environment. They, and generations to come, are the ones who will have to live with the repercussions of our failure to rein in our government the longest.

Thank you to everyone who came out to speak, to listen, and to connect with other Ontarians who want better for our beautiful province than Doug Ford is giving us.

EDIT - For the apparently obligatory "Lolz dozens of u" comments: it was about 200ish people which can indeed be expressed in dozens.

More importantly however, as OFL President Laura Walton noted in her speech, every person *privileged* enough to be able to attend one of these protests represents hundreds of members of their community who cannot do so because they are one of the thousands of Ontarians working multiple jobs to keep a roof over their heads and their family fed; who cannot attend because of family responsibilities; who cannot attend for health reasons. Ford can dismiss that at his peril.

Photos from Queen's Park Fight Ford protests June 29th

This was the Queen's Park edition of the June Province-wide protests. Most were on the Saturday, but Toronto was shifted to the Monday to avoid scheduling conflicts with Pride events.

A smaller group than the usual given it was a Monday evening, (250-300 is my estimate after counting through some sequential marching shots) but no less spirited!

As always, a great mix of speakers and organisations were present to talk about their areas of focus. It's something I very much appreciate about these large general protests is that it's become (in Toronto at least) a good way to connect with others advocating regarding the issues you are specifically passionate about.

Thanks again everyone and I'll see you in a couple weeks on July 25th!

Current location lists available here: https://protestdougford.com/july-25th-protest-locations/

There is also a Billy Bishop protest on July 26th being organised by NoJetsTO. Check out their website and social media for up-to-date info on time and location.

Fight Ford Photos - Queen's Park May 30th

My photos from May's Fight Ford protest at Queen's Park.

Province-wide protests are happening again this weekend in most locations. Queen's Park is the exception: the June protest will be held on Monday the 29th at 7pm so as not to conflict with Pride events.

There was excellent turnout this weekend despite the gross weather. The rally started in the north end of the park beside the Edward VII sculpture.

Speakers included MPP Chris Glover (Spadina-Fort York), MPP and Ontario Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner (Guelph), Environmental Defense Canada representative Phil Pothen, City of Toronto Councillor Dianne Saxe (Ward 11), Fighting Ford organiser Bonnie Powell, NoJetsTO Chair Norm Di Pasquale, Toronto Green Party Candidate Andrew Massey, John Powell speaking about Fair Vote Canada, and MPP Stephanie Smyth (Toronto-St. Paul's). *Please correct me if I've got any names wrong!*

Afterwards, the group marched to the top of the park, looping down in front of the Legislature building, around the bottom of Queen's Park Circle and back to finish up in front of the Legislature. I unfortunately had to duck out at this point, but I understand that (much like in March) a substantial chunk of the group remained for more informal speeches. And possibly a Doug Ford texting campaign. Would hate to think he missed out when so many people turned up for him.

The next Fighting Ford rally is planned for May 30th. There is also a protest/march planned by Ontario Healthcare Coalition on May 28th. I believe they are meeting at Union Station at noon and then marching to Queen's Park.

Thanks everyone and see you again soon!
