Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow: We Need Media to Fight "Homophobic Bullshit"

>“Canada, we are well-known to build equality, caring, and we stand up for each other, and that is so special,” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow told a room of over 100 prominent Canadian queer people and allies last Tuesday at Uncloseted Media’s first Canadian fundraiser at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club.

>“Right now, people are not really reading news. … So you have to cut through a whole lot in order to capture people’s imaginations. You have to really dig deep because truth matters. That’s why journalism matters,” she told the crowd.

>“If we don’t have truth, we have this,” she said, pointing to Uncloseted Media stories covering anti-LGBTQ movements on a TV screen. “Can I call it bullshit? Homophobic bullshit!”

>In a time when so many politicians have ditched LGBTQ rights or watered down their support, Mayor Chow’s unfiltered remarks were refreshing.

Relocating family to Southern Ontario — Opinions on places to live?

Hi everyone! My husband and I currently live in Thunder Bay with our three children (12, 10, and 1). I was born and raised here and have family in the area, but support for us has become pretty limited. My husband is originally from Southern Ontario, and after a lot of discussion, we’ve decided we’d like to relocate closer to his side of the family.

We’ve been looking into Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes area because we really love the outdoors, fishing, camping, lakes, trails, and family-oriented lifestyle. Affordability is also important to us.

To be honest, Thunder Bay has changed a lot over the last few years, and we’ve been feeling ready for a fresh start somewhere with a stronger sense of community and more opportunities for our kids.

For those familiar with the region, where would you recommend a family settle? We’d love honest opinions on different towns/cities — the pros and cons, cost of living, schools, safety, healthcare access, job opportunities, and overall vibe.

We’d also love recommendations for:

- Great family activities

- Outdoor spots and beaches

- Kid-friendly communities

- Areas to avoid

If you’ve made a similar move or raised kids in the area, I’d really appreciate hearing your experience. Pictures are welcome too! Thanks so much 🙂

Has anyone in Ontario used online ADHD assessment services?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been trying to understand ADHD assessment options in Ontario and I’m finding the whole process pretty confusing.

From what I’ve seen, public routes can involve long waits, while private assessments can get expensive quite quickly. I’ve also seen different information online about what happens after diagnosis, especially around follow-up care, insurance, and whether family doctors accept documentation from online providers.

I came across Fastreat while looking into online ADHD assessment options, but I’m still trying to figure out what the experience is actually like from people who have used it.

Has anyone here in Ontario used Fastreat or another online ADHD assessment service?

I’m mainly wondering:

Was the assessment process professional and thorough?

Were there any issues with follow-up care afterwards?

Did insurance cover any part of it?

Did your family doctor accept the report or documentation?

Would really appreciate hearing recent experiences before deciding what route to take.

21 years old from Ontario and lost $15k+ gambling this year. I genuinely need help/advice.

I’m 21 from Ontario and this year alone I’ve lost over $15k CAD gambling.

It started with sports betting and online casino/live dealer stuff thinking I could make quick money or recover losses, but it slowly turned into constantly chasing. Every time I lose, I convince myself I can win it back, and then I end up even deeper.

A portion of the money was OSAP/student funding that was meant for school and living expenses, which honestly makes me feel even worse about the situation. I know how irresponsible that sounds and I’ve been beating myself up over it constantly.

I haven’t fully told my family because I’m embarrassed and ashamed of how bad it got. I feel stressed almost every day thinking about the money I lost and how badly I messed up at my age.

Ontario making gambling/apps so accessible definitely didn’t help either. It feels impossible to escape when there are ads and apps everywhere.

I’m posting because I genuinely want to stop before this ruins my future even more. If anyone here has gone through something similar and managed to recover financially or mentally, I’d really appreciate hearing your story or any advice. Right now I honestly just feel lost.

Confused about a 10 Day Temporary Vehicle Permit or Vehicle Transfer without a Safety Standards Certificate

I have purchased a 1980s vintage car from a private seller. The seller will give me the UVIP, the Bill of Sale and Vehicle portion of the permit. The vehicle is "unfit" or "as-is", it will require a Safety Standards Certificate. My insurance company also requires a Safety Standards Certificate, in order to add it onto a policy.

The previous owner is placing it on me to obtain the Safety Standards Certificate and to have the vehicle Appraised by a dealer as it is a 40 year old car.

From Service Ontario you can possibly get the following in this condition:

  1. Temporary License Plate Sticker:

To get a temporary licence plate sticker visit ServiceOntario and bring:

  • the vehicle permit indicating that the vehicle’s status is "FIT" or “TMP”
    • if the vehicle is not yet registered in your name, the back of the permit must be completed and signed by the current registered owner
  • proof of insurance that includes the name of your insurance company and the policy number for the vehicle
  • if the vehicle is being registered in your name and you wish to attach your own plates bring the existing licence plates (if available) along with the plate portion of the vehicle permit
  • if you are registering a vehicle for the first time, you must pay the fees for vehicle registration and the purchase of licence plates including applicable taxes

Reference: https://www.ontario.ca/page/temporary-licence-plate-sticker

  1. Special Permit:

To get a Special Permit in-person, you need:

  • the current vehicle permit, indicating that the vehicle’s status is “FIT” (the vehicle has a FIT status which confirms that the vehicle meets the minimum safety standards to drive, get a safety standard certificate)
    • if the vehicle is not in “FIT” status, a valid safety standard certificate is required
  • the back of the vehicle permit (the ownership) signed by the owner (if you do not own the vehicle)
  • the name of your insurance company and the policy number
  • identification document proving legal name, date of birth and signature

I am not understanding which permit is right for me, or if I am eligible to have temporary plates on the vehicle if I cannot obtain insurance or a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC).

  1. How am I supposed to register the vehicle without insurance? Is this just a vehicle transfer?
  2. Will I be able to get temporary plates just so I can move the vehicle, without having to rent a trailer or towing it to get it to a mechanic to get a SSC? I thought that temporary plates still involves insurance?
  3. How am I supposed to obtain insurance without a SSC?

I have a question for the OPP on here

I’m in gr 12 and 2 weeks ago I had a friend post a concerning story so I told the school who told her parents and she was admitted to a place to see a psychiatrist and get meds. I told her it was me and she is mad and hasn’t spoke to me since.
Anyway, just before I came out and told her it was me, she messaged me on a different platform saying “You will be punished for your crimes”.
Is this a threat? I didn’t think about it til my best friend brought it up again. She’s very mentally unstable and everything and she doesn’t scare me but again I don’t know what goes on it her head and she’s probably still furious at me.
Would it be a waste of time if I were to go to my towns local police station? I just don’t know what to do and I don’t want to tell my mom because I don’t want her worrying. Thanks

Just learned that in 2020, ontario passed an agricultural gag law that lets the government prosecute whistleblowers on animal cruelty

Are you kidding me? How is it that everything im reading that doug ford has done is so unbelievably bad. They made it illegal to whistle blow animal cruelty? Thats just the lowest of the low. Instead of trying to be better, the ford government is more focused on appeasing lobbyists and hiding all of their crimes.

Transferring license Nova Scotia class 5 to Ontario G

Can some please share their experience if they have transferred their license from Nova Scotia class 5 to Ontario license.

I have been offered a job and my job requires me to have my G license. I am moving from Nova Scotia, and having been driving for the past 3 years and got my class 5 in sept of last year so only have 8 months of experience. Will I qualify for class g license or be given g2 and just have to do the road test without waiting for a year for the test.
