First 3000km Review - Nitpicky edition
iX3 50, Black Shappire, M Version, black interior, first electric car, previously had 3 series and vw Passat tourings, somewhere in western sunny Europe! There are lots of good reviews on the car, so I’m focusing on smaller details (some are really annoying)
- 3d hub display: cool, but useless, you cannot see it with sunglasses, the panoramic display is right there so… I see no point
- cup holders: small scratches oh the small “hindges” after the first few uses, which is really annoying
- no space in the middle to just drop things: keys, cards, a tissue, anything that you just need to drop: you just have the support for the phone (the wireless one), and the cup holder, I just wanted a small space to drop things for short drives
- speed limit warning: given that it’s mandatory, the car made a suggestion to have a voice shortcut, so every time I get in the car I just say yes and it’s turned off! Smart!
- D vs B modes: I don’t understand why to give this options, and sometimes it already happened being in B because I pushed it twice, and the car really breaks a lot, I just don’t understand why you have this “physical” choice while others are available in different modes
- steering wheel (vertical spokes): I really don’t notice it anymore… how people might get confused I don’t understand (as I saw in some YouTube reviews…)
- iPhone holder: I get that you almost dont need the phone, but still I like to have in a direct line of sight, I still haven’t found a good support or place to put it in this car
- CarPlay: I just hate that this is not better integrated with the car, and i know this affects more cars, but in this car with that screen it just does not make any sense, it has enough space to have multiple things in parallel. Sometimes it doesn’t connect automatically… which was flawless in the vw!
- Panoramic display: cool, beautiful, very high tech, feels useless after some time, or should I say overkill for what it shows, I don’t need that piece of high tech to see the temperature… (obviously I am talking about the middle and right part, the driver one works great)
- charging flap: yes it opens randomly, as already read in some other posts, annoying yes, but I assume it will be fixed
- Sound: harman kardon sound amazing, although it is my first experience with premium sound
- How many fingerprints do you want on the screen? Yes! (Annoying)
- Seat belt warning can be turned off? Best feature ever! And yes, I always wear the seat belt every time, but sometimes leaving the garage, or just before pulling up it gets very annoying
- worst bit: small kids having trouble opening the doors, the opening and closing of the door handles isn’t flawless and it gets me worried with kids. In everyday use, it is great, you get to the car it pops out, no problem. But then you are on vacations with kids, sometimes you just stop to take a picture, then the kids get out, then they come back, then the handle does not pop out, then the kid touches the sensor, then they pop out, then other kid on the other door touches the sensor, then the handles shut, then the kid gets stuck, then he cries… it was more or less like this, I think they really screwed up with this one, and I am waiting on my American friends that will sue bmw after the first loss of finger
- the black glass sections between doors are all scratched by now, really small scratches which I guess it happens in all cars, maybe I am just noticing everything more in this car
- the car draws a lot of attention to it, the front is really big comparing to other cars of the same size, so be prepared for that
- screen is very responsive, software works great, but there are things that can improve, for example: you have shortcuts that you can personalize, which is smart, but they are in the Home Screen, so, let’s say I want to go to my shortcut to “turn off car”, but I am currently other in the maps screen or the CarPlay (which I imagine most people are while driving), so I click home and then I scroll and then I can access shortcuts… hum, instead I can just click home, then the right menu, and then the right option, what kind of shortcut is that? Annoying!
- Car turning on and off: very annoying! So, you get to destination, click P, take foot off the break, open door, car switches off (if you don’t take the foot off it does not turn off, so if you are listening to loud music it keeps going when you open the door). Then, with the car switched off, you go to the passenger side to pick up something, car turns on! Why??? Music comes back on, everyone is looking at you, you close the door, music keeps going until you lock the car… btw, if you were listening to a podcast, you just lost a few seconds, so the next time you listen to it, go back a minute and continue… this also happens if you go out and open the driver car on again, so if you forget something, well, you already know…. Annoying!
- Assisted driving: love it, nothing to pick on, but sometimes I don’t even turn it on, just having the automatic breaking all the time is such a relaxing driving experience
- speed: I saw a lot of people in reviews talking about weight and other things, I just feel now like I am in a race car everyday, I think the reviewers review so many things they lack some “reality”, maybe some people that come from other eletrics like teslas and others are already used to it, but damn, if you are coming from an ice, specially some diesel, even the powerful ones, you are in for a threat
- I do not have the panoramic roof, which I regret, not because the car is too dark (I read that once, but I do not feel it inside), just because I tried one this summer and I loved it, although the owner did complain a bit on the lack of sunshade with direct it
- the frunk is good for some storage, but why do you have to unlock it from inside?? This is something ready for ice models for sure, it makes no sense. Annoying!
- wireless charger heats a lot! Annoying!
I would still make the same decision all over again! Love the thing! 😄
Any other picky thing you want to know?
Cheers!
