At a crossroads and looking for some advice. My short career thus far has been roughly 60% medmal defense, 25% general business, and 15% mishmash of virtually everything else from IP to construction to felony criminal defense. Lots of first chair trial, appeal, and state supreme court experience. Anyway, here's the short of it:

  • firm A - 5 months. Left when a buddy from law school informed me how ridiculous my job was at $45k salary and no benefits for 2200 hours (I know, I know...).
  • firm B - 1 year. Firm moved physical locations from one city to a city much farther away, and I stayed behind.
  • firm C - 1.5 years. This was my dream firm. Loved working there. Left when my wife had a brain hemorrhage and the firm had to replace me during my time off.
  • firm D - 10 months. Big client they anticipated with a bunch of cases pulled out. I was the newest hire so first one (of several) let go as work evaporated.
  • firm E - 2 years. Also loved this one. Left when the firm randomly decided to stop offering any form of health insurance. Very tough with my wife's catastrophic medical condition.
  • firm F - a couple weeks. I was sold a great story in the interviews of tons of work, and then the firm is dead. Handful of cases, most of them are already at the finish line, no hours to be had by anyone, and I have no idea why they hired me in the first place...
  • firm G - I'm still hunting for this one (resigning from firm F tomorrow morning) and have a few interviews lined up.

Do I hang it up? I have other employable skills, though not nearly in the same pay bracket. I have enough savings / investment to sit comfortably for 1-2 years and uncomfortably for maybe 3-4 years.

I know there is no cut and dry objective answer, but I'm all ears. Also helps to just get it off my chest. Cheers, fellow barristers.
