Tight budget. Worried about money
I just graduated residency and am starting a 6 figure salary job in a few months. Due to an unexpected rules change (no fault of my own) my start date will be delayed by 1 month. That means my first paycheck also gets delayed. I'm worried because my wife and I did not budget for an extra month of me not working. She also has a job. When I was in residency my income accounted for about half our monthly income and her job accounted for the other half. We currently have about 23k in savings. Our estimated average monthly expenses is about 9k. This month is going to be more because we had to move. This really is part of a really long year for us. Starting last summer we have literally had something happen every month that has taken a piece out of our bank account. This setback with my job is just another blow. We had calculated that we would need to pull about 5k from savings each month to make up for me not working. So we would squeak by with a few thousand to spare. But this job delay disrupts that math. Plus, any more financial surprises could cook us. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. How do we avoid running out of money before I start working?
For a little more context we have two car payments (both our cars gave out this year and had to be replaced) which total about 900 per month, rent of about 2500 per month, and student loans of about 350 per month. With all the inflation we probably spend at least 400 per month on groceries. Cell phone/internet runs about 200 a month. Power is about 130.
