First Real Lesson...Flopped

So, I teach grades 8 through 12 and this is about my 11th grade algebra 2 class. Today was our second day of school. Yesterday, I really focused on watching them collaborate, letting them get back into being with their classmates, involving the new students, so I could watch them interact with each other so I could see how they were going to be if we ever have to do group work or anything. This is my first year teaching. I have been a para, I have been a substitute, I ran a daycare center for 3 years, I went to college for education for three and a half years and then quit taking classes. Teaching is what I enjoy and what I'm good at, I just don't know what I did wrong with this lesson. I'm trying to follow the books, but they aren't very in-depth. I did not pick this curriculum it was chosen by the math teacher who was here previously, so I looked for the additional resources and the additional resources are 10 added questions and then a review of a completely different subject material. We were trying to do transformations of parent functions. They understood what the parent functions were and they could categorize them as constants, linear, absolute value, or quadratic, but asking them, "okay, so, if we add a three to the end of the equation, what does that do to our graph? *y=(x^2)+3 instead of y=(x^2)*" They just stare at me. I don't even know how to describe it. I know from past conversations that their previous teacher would take points away for asking for help, she would take points away if they asked for help from another teacher, too. Part of the issue is they don't know how to ask for help because they have not been allowed to. They just say, "I don't get it!" and when I try to walk them through it again, they give up. My current plan is to go over it again tomorrow, because something did not click between what I was saying and what they were or weren't getting. I just feel so defeated, and I know that it isn't the kids' fault, but I'm at a loss for what other information could be helpful for them.

Hairdresser drama?

My sister and I aren't speaking right now. I, F26, Marie, F29

Tldr: do I have to ask my sister before going to a new hairdresser?

I'm in mobile, so please ignore the poor grammar and formatting, I'm doing my best!

Okay, so my sister Marie and I have always been very close and our family in general is just very like tight knit. Before Father's Day, she was kicked out of her boyfriend's house and was told that if she didn't quit drinking and figure her \\\*bleep\\\* out and go to rehab and grow up then there was not going to be a future. He texted her that at 5:00 in the morning when she doesn't normally get up until around 8:00. At the time, she hadn't been working because she broke her arm so she did not have any reason to be out doing things, she's going through a depressive episode so she was drinking more, however, he was the one that was drinking the majority of the alcohol in the house. The main reason for the breakup, according to him, was her drinking. Speaking to a mutual friend when asked about their relationship, I said, "oh, Marie is back in our parents' house because they are taking space." I believe that is the phrase that I used or something very similar. This mutual friend spoke to Marie and asked about it looking to support her and Marie sent me an AI response saying that I was being very disrespectful speaking to other people about her relationship and gossiping about her, which yes, I should not have brought up anything about their relationship, that was not my place. I didn't mean to be disrespectful, but just because it wasn't intended doesn't mean that it didn't happen. I'm not trying to minimize the fact that gossiping about her was disrespectful. However, it's really hypocritical and that is what is so irritating and frustrating to me. Marie is a hairdresser in our hometown, and more often than not she will tell me about her clients and the conversations that they have and I am brought up in 70% of their conversations and they speak in depth about things in my life that I have told her in confidence, or I told somebody else in confidence, and they spoke to her about it. I am just feeling a lot of hypocrisy and it's making me very upset and frustrated. I don't want to leave it unaddressed but I also don't want to beg for her to be in my life if she's going to be so flippant about how she speaks of me and so upset when I speak about her at all. She is the queen of "well this is how I would do it", even though she is in a completely different career and point in her life than I am. Because she is my big sister, however, Maria is my hairdresser and I start new job in just over a week and I want to get a pretty drastic haircut. My hair right now is down to about maybe my mid to low back and I'm going to cut it to just above my shoulders. I have an appointment with another hairdresser in the town that I live in and I told my mom about it. She told me that I have to check with Marie first so that I don't ruin the relationship, but I feel like if gossip is the main issue between us then avoiding the place where most gossip spreads is a healthier choice for our relationship in the long run. I need some advice...
