Buy or pass? Rare Rolex Ref. 1513 with original mesh bracelet
I found a very unusual yellow gold 34mm Rolex ref. 1513 at a vintage watch store in Japan and would love to hear some opinions from vintage Rolex collectors.
The watch has its original mesh bracelet and what appears to be a cross-fluted bezel. The condition is excellent overall, the bracelet is extremely tight, and it also comes with the original box. The asking price is approximately $18,250 USD including Japanese sales tax.
I was originally searching for a yellow gold Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse ref. 3738, but I randomly came across this watch while shopping. The store itself is very old-school — no online shop, no social media, and the owner is known for being quite selective with customers, which probably explains the low Google Maps rating.
I was lucky enough to try it on, and honestly, it fit my 6.25-inch wrist surprisingly well. The integrated mesh bracelet and hidden clasp felt much more special in person than I expected.
Now I’m torn between continuing the search for the “right” Ellipse or buying this 1513 while I have the chance.
I also learned that ref. 1514 has a somewhat similar appearance to the 1513, although the bezel design seems slightly different. The 1513 I found also has a wave-like pattern on the mesh bracelet that I have not seen on most 1514 examples.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts on:
* the rarity of ref. 1513
* current market value
* collectibility of these mesh bracelet Rolex models
* differences between ref. 1513 and 1514
* whether this feels like a strong buy or something to pass on
For comparison, I’ll also attach a photo of the Golden Ellipse I was considering. I would also like to share my current collection:
* AP RO 15450st gray dial
* AP Code 11.59 15210qt smoke dial
* Patek Aquanaut 5167/1A (usually worn with a rubber bracelet)
* Rolex Day Date 40 228258 sundust dial
