21, from Turkey, no high school diploma — is there a realistic path to university in Europe?

Hey everyone,

I’m 21 and from Turkey, and I’m trying to figure out whether there is actually a realistic way for me to study for a bachelor’s degree in Europe.

My education is a bit unusual. I only completed middle school and I don’t currently have a traditional high school diploma. I know the obvious answer is usually “finish high school first,” but I’m specifically trying to find out whether there are other legitimate routes that I don’t know about.

I’ve been learning on my own for a while, mainly around programming, AI, mathematics, GIS and science. I’ve also built some actual projects rather than only studying theory. I’m not saying this makes me academically eligible by itself — I just want to explain that I’m serious about continuing my education.

My biggest goal is Finland. I’ve been looking particularly at the University of Helsinki’s Bachelor’s Programme in Science.

I found their Open University admission route, and this is what confused me: according to their website, people applying through that route don’t necessarily need another qualification that gives general eligibility for higher education. Apparently you can qualify through university-level Open University studies instead.

That sounds promising, but I’m having trouble understanding how realistic it actually is for someone living in Turkey.

I’m trying to figure out things like:

- Can I use a GED to become eligible for European universities?

- Are there universities where I can enter through a foundation/open university/access route instead of going through the normal high school system?

- Can any of these routes be completed mostly online from another country?

- Is Finland actually a realistic target, or should I be looking at other European countries?

- Has anyone here been in a similar situation, especially coming from Turkey or another non-EU country?

I’m not looking for some magical shortcut. I’m completely willing to study and take exams. I just don’t want to spend years following a route that turns out not to be necessary.

Basically, I’m trying to answer one question:

If you were in my exact situation, what would you do to get from where I am now to a legitimate bachelor’s degree in Europe?

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have actually dealt with European university admissions, non-traditional education, GEDs, foundation years, Open University routes, or something similar.

Thanks.

My Background (Going from -1 to 0)

I am a 21-year-old living in Turkey, currently stuck in a deeply toxic and manipulative family environment. When I was in primary school, my family exploited a bureaucratic loophole to get a fake 94% disability/special needs report on me. They did this for financial/legal benefits, forcing me to intentionally fail tests and act "incapable" so they wouldn't go to jail for fraud. Because of this, I was pulled out of the normal education system completely.

When I turned 18, I fought the bureaucracy alone, entered medical committees, and legally cleared that fake report down to 0%. I proved there was absolutely nothing wrong with my cognitive abilities. Right now, I work at a local bazaar two days a week just to earn pocket money, trying to figure out a way to escape this household.

My Skills & The "Spiky" Profile

Even though my formal education was stolen from me, my mind never stopped working. I treat learning like software engineering. I am a self-directed developer specializing in full-stack application infrastructures. I have a strong passion for academic, "museum-style" UI/UX aesthetics (working strictly with specific hex palettes like #F6F3EE, #1E2A3A, and serif typography like Playfair Display).

I also created my own modular framework called "Language OS" to teach myself French. Instead of memorizing rules, I broke the language down into modular engines ("Identity," "Action Motors," "Time Capsules") and I am currently scaling this system to achieve journalistic literacy in French.

My Ultimate Dream: Academia

My biggest dream is to enter top-tier academia (yes, even places like Harvard). I know how crazy it sounds for someone with zero high school credits working at a bazaar, but I don't want to wait 4 years to complete a standard high school curriculum. I need to get out now and prove my worth.

I have been researching alternative "backdoors" into higher education and I need your brutal honesty, experiences, and advice on the following routes:

GED (US) or DAEU (France): As an international student, is it worth taking these equivalency exams? Can I realistically use them to apply to top global universities?

Harvard Extension School (HES): I read about the "Earn Your Way In" system (passing 3 courses to become a degree candidate). Is this a realistic path for someone in my position to get an Ivy League education without a high school diploma?

The Open University (UK) / University of the People: Can I use these open-enrollment systems to build a solid academic transcript to later transfer into a top-tier traditional university?

Mature Student / Portfolio Entry (Europe): Do innovative European universities (especially in tech/design/humanities) accept 21+ students based purely on a strong portfolio (my full-stack projects and UI/UX architecture)?

What I Need From You

How do I finance the cost of exams like the GED when I'm barely making pocket money? What is the smartest, fastest move I can make right now to build an undeniable academic profile? Has anyone here successfully hacked their way into top academia from absolute rock bottom?

Any advice, reality checks, or roadmaps would mean the world to me. Thank you.
