Questions about GOG

With all the hubbub about Sony ditching discs and the uncertainty of future systems, I’ve been weighing up the options of getting a low end PC in the near future. To give some context, I’ve always been a fully physical console gamer (even down to waiting until someone like LRG releases something I’m interested in) and tend to mostly play older titles from the 5th, 6th and 7th gen on original hardware.

I checked out GOG and was honestly stunned by the sheer variety, and the low cost of it all, to the point where I could effectively ‘retire’ the vast majority of what I already own and substitute it with PC versions. Literally 90% of the games I enjoy are on there!

So my main query is this; how does it all, y’know… work? I know Steam has a launcher, and from what I’ve read GOG does as well. I heard you can just back up a game’s files on to a USB drive or burn it to a disc should you so desire. Do you just log in to the launcher/website and see everything you’ve purchased?

Apologies if these are all very silly questions or seem self-explanatory. When it comes to PC stuff, I just honestly have no clue how this all works. To put in perspective, the last PC games I bought and played extensively were RCT2 and the original Sims… in 2003/2004, so it’s safe to say I’m a little out of the loop. Appreciate any and all advice or suggestions!
