Questions about GOG

With all the hubbub about Sony ditching discs and the uncertainty of future systems, I’ve been weighing up the options of getting a low end PC in the near future. To give some context, I’ve always been a fully physical console gamer (even down to waiting until someone like LRG releases something I’m interested in) and tend to mostly play older titles from the 5th, 6th and 7th gen on original hardware.

I checked out GOG and was honestly stunned by the sheer variety, and the low cost of it all, to the point where I could effectively ‘retire’ the vast majority of what I already own and substitute it with PC versions. Literally 90% of the games I enjoy are on there!

So my main query is this; how does it all, y’know… work? I know Steam has a launcher, and from what I’ve read GOG does as well. I heard you can just back up a game’s files on to a USB drive or burn it to a disc should you so desire. Do you just log in to the launcher/website and see everything you’ve purchased?

Apologies if these are all very silly questions or seem self-explanatory. When it comes to PC stuff, I just honestly have no clue how this all works. To put in perspective, the last PC games I bought and played extensively were RCT2 and the original Sims… in 2003/2004, so it’s safe to say I’m a little out of the loop. Appreciate any and all advice or suggestions!

Planning to buy more games on GOG

With the recent events like the Sony/Playstation controversy, I decided to use this Summer Sale opportunity to buy more games on GOG. The quote "You will own nothing & be happy" is no longer a matter of if, but when. Corpos are becoming more and more anti-consumer & playing enforcer on their paying customers.

Majority of my purchases are on Steam, and they're currently still good towards us with Gaben managing Valve. But the future is uncertain, and we will never know if Steam will go to the dark side when he's no longer around.

That's why I have set a budget to buy as many games as I can, especially when many are on sale right now, backup the offline installers to HDD and physical media. That's the only way to be sure that I truly own my games. I will also start prioritising buying new games on GOG, unless they're only available on Steam.

I am tired of waiting for achievements on linux, so I am asking how do I make achievements popup from games I bought on GOG.

this is actually a hybrid question for both GOG games and a Linux system question, but I can figure the linux side by myself so I will focus on the GOG achievements question.

is there an API for each game installed via offline installers achievements? I want to make it so whenever I get an achievements in a GOG game, without galaxy, a system notification popup will happen showing me the achievements icon, name, and description.

now I can figure out the system notifications by myself probably, but the question is how to I capture the "event" of an achievements unlocking while a GOG game is running?

GOG is my priority

I've decided to make GOG my primary platform. Even though its library isn't as large as Steam's, I'm completely okay with that because I genuinely love the philosophy behind the platform. I'll still keep Steam installed for a few games, but if a game is available on GOG, I'll buy it there without a second thought

Thats it, i am going to buy from GOG now on

With the recent news i have switched to GOG and bought all the doom games and currently downloading their offline installers. I will also burn them to disc and make a little collection out of it. Also going to encurage my friends to use GOG more and going to be a patron.

I had enough i want to "own" my games and dont want to be scared of losing my favourite games to the whim of a greedy corporation.

Made The Switch to GOG(I wonder how many posts like this have been made before)

I've never been interested in GOG, why would I when Steam was right there, however after many things that have transpired in the gaming industry, people's games being taken away, obviously you all use GOG, you know why, you've probably heard it in this thread a thousands time, anyways here is my collection so far, tell me what do you think, what should I get and how much my tastes are cringe

Not showing that I started playing game and it's achievements?

Hey, I bought this year at the summer sale game "call of cthulhu" (I have the same game on Steam) but when I started it and played the game it didn't show that I played the first time at the GOG or show achievements at the main page of activity (aktywność) of this game. This is some sort of bug? Or because I played that game on the same exact pc on the Steam version?

I played "call of cthulhu" on Steam in 2021 and before writing it here I opened another game that I know I played at the same pc I have Steam version and Gog version of the game and there was similar problem

Getting into physical media printing

Im sure many others are looking into gog as an alternative after the recent announcements, i collect only physical currently but want to get started on physical printing using gog. Could anyone recommend some entry level disc drives, i did some research and a lot of it was focused on movies, there also very expensive, there was also something about specific models of pioneer drives but i wasn't sure if that applied for games. Any help and advice would be helpful. Im also in Canada if that helps.

ProtonDB integration

Hi all! I want to buy more games on GOG with all the shitty news coming out. However, I'm only playing on my Linux PC and my Steam Deck. Is there any way to have ProtonDB information listed on GOG? I know about Heroic and Lutris but I haven't found a way to display that info on there

Changing System Requirements

So I am the proccess of building an old pc and noticed that some games on gog have differing system requirements than the original. For example space marine 1 (the original listing, not the modernized version) has Windows 10 listed. The game was made before Windows 10 existed. I noticed the same with Dawn of War 2 and the original x-com (ufo defense). With X-com it's very similar and slightly more buggy sequel, terror from the deep, had it's original requirements, same happened with the third game, apocolypse. Is this a bug of some sort or are the games that different from their original releases that they won't work the original hardware they were designed for.

If you could only physically back-up 100 GOG games what would they be?

Inspired by Sony’s recent Fuckery I’ve bought a stack of 100 rideable DVDs and some jewel cases and I’m gonna physically back up my GOG library are there any games that you think absolutely positively be in that back up in the occasion that something bad happened and we lose GOG?

GoG or steam and Skyrim Anniversary edition or Special Edition

I am new to the PC gaming and modding community. I would really love to experience Skyrim on PC with mods, but I am torn between two things:

First: Should I buy the game from Steam or GOG? Is there a difference between them when it comes to mod compatibility and support?

Second: Should I buy the Skyrim Anniversary Edition or the Special Edition?

Any arcade fighters?

I’m not a stranger to GOG but I will admit the recent furore has made me revisit. I’m having a browse but why is there only a few catergories? I can only find RPGs and FPS titles. Are there any arcade fighters ? Tekken / Street fighter style.
