Need advice: Switching from Field Tech to HVAC in Calgary

Hey everyone,

I’m a field tech in Calgary making $24/hr. I have a SAIT engineering diploma, field experience, a clean Class 5 driver's license, and full safety tickets (H2S, Fall Protection, Confined Space, First Aid).

I want to switch to HVAC/R in January, but I’m torn between two options:

  1. SAIT Pre-Employment Program: 12-week course to learn the basics and write the 1st-year exam (costs ~$6k and 3 months with no income).

  2. Apply Directly as a Helper: Start cold-calling contractors now using my current field and safety experience.

Need your help with a few questions:

  1. Will contractors hire me as a helper with my field background, or do I really need the pre-employment course first?

  2. Is the SAIT pre-employment program worth the time and money?

  3. What’s the best branch (Residential vs. Commercial HVAC vs. Refrigeration) for long-term pay in Alberta?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
