Workforce Development/Integration is broken

Between the gamification of the system (fraud) and AI it is almost impossible for an honest and hard-working person to get past the gatekeepers (for example, the ATS) of employers. Some industries are being replaced by AI while others have embraced it as an imperfect (and, quite often, faulty) screening tool. Have you been interviewed by a computer yet? If not, you probably will be in the future.
Competition is fierce-so many people are chasing fewer jobs…yet, many employers argue that they can’t find enough workers (another topic for another day!). Networking is fine (and should always be done) but it takes more than that now. There could be work beyond your current sphere (emphasis on ‘could’, not ‘will be’ or for ‘everyone’ but could exist for some). Have you looked outside of the metro areas for work?

Barista or Receptionist Salon jobs.

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for work in either the barista industry or the salon industry. I graduated from hairstyling school about a year ago, but unfortunately I haven’t had much luck finding opportunities in that field yet. While I really enjoyed the hairstyling course, I found myself leaning more toward the receptionist side of the salon environment rather than becoming an apprentice stylist. As for the barista industry, I have a bit of experience and would love to continue building my skills and experience in that area as well. My main form of transportation is transit, so I’m preferably looking for places that are accessible by public transit.

If anyone has any information, recommendations, or sources, please let me know. Thank you!

Apprenticeship advice

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice on my resume and apprenticeships in general.

I have some experience working as a construction labourer and I'm trying to break into an HVAC apprenticeship, but I'm having a really hard time finding someone to indenture me. I've already enrolled in an HVAC pre-employment program since I've heard it can help get your foot in the door, but honestly, without any prospects lined up right now, the idea of going through with it feels a little disheartening. The last thing I want is to invest $5,000+ into a program only to end up in the same situation afterward.

I'm also considering entering the pipe trades instead, as I've heard it can be easier to get into, and I'm thinking I could potentially use that experience to pivot back into the HVAC industry down the road.

I've uploaded my resume here and would really appreciate any feedback on how I can improve it. I did use AI to help tailor it to match keywords a little better, but everything on it is accurate to my actual experience.

I'd genuinely welcome any and all advice. this whole situation has been causing me a lot of anxiety and I'm honestly not sure what direction to take it in. I know a lot of people have gone through the HVAC pre-employment route only to face a tough job market, and I'm just trying to figure out how to navigate that.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

(P.S. I used Claude to help clean up this post as well)

Single mom, newly separated - no work history

I have three kids, 1 starting at UCal this fall, one in college right now, one in elementary. My spouse and I are separating, he was paying for all the bills and I was a housewife and cared for all the kids needs. He's left us dry, is now unemployed, and I have to figure out where we are going to live as the landlord is selling the home.

I've gone to viewings and all of them ask for bank statements and proof of employment. Some ask for proof of these things before the viewing. I know why they do this and I have nothing against them, but I just need a chance to breathe and not be homeless with my kids next month.

Sure I will start with an employment agency soon...but no one is hiring someone like me whose last job was over 20 years ago. I need time to rebuild, time I do not have. I am exhausted. What agencies can help with getting a single mom a job fast...? :(

*LOOKING* For a role within a construction company: Experience in Estimating, Quantity Surveying and Admin

Hi everyone,

I am new to Calgary and really struggling to get interviews in the industry… I am open to do almost anything and have a degree and 5+ experience in Estimating/Surveying in construction.

I am posting on here on the off chance that someone can help or even give some advice, I’m not sure what i’m doing wrong or if the market just is that volatile at the moment.

But I wont give up 🍀

Thank you!
