Almost got smoked by the spotter train

There's a Sunday group bike ride that goes out to Baker's Bridge and up old Shalona hill. When we we're descending Shalona today, the spotter train blew through the train track crossing without hitting the horn (or may have hit the horn last second, it all happened in a flash). If the guy in front of me had been a second slower or I a second faster then we'd be dead right now.

Gonna shoot DSNGRR a constructive email but posting here as a reminder to be extra vigilant crossing tracks with no safety gates. Also, maybe we should install some safety gates.

2nd Ave Sports

Earlier this week I had a not so awesome bike service experience at 2nd Ave that their manager Matt made instantly right. The nature of the first mistake made me a little nervous about having more complicated work done there, but Matt assured me they were capable, so I trusted him.

The next day, I brought my 2026 Trek Checkpoint in for it's 30 day service (primarily to investigate a creak that I thought was coming from the bottom bracket). Matt had it disassembled that day and discovered that it was actually an off center rear axel mount that was causing the issue. This is a factory defect that can't be fixed.

When both 2nd Ave and I reached out to Trek, they told me they couldn't replace the frame in the same color (very unique coral color) but would replace it with a bronze frame (sparkly shit brown). They said the other option was to pay them $1500 more for a carbon frame if I wanted a different color (my bike was originally $1900).

When I called Matt, he already knew this was the solution Trek had come up with and had already made a plan to replace my frame with another one from a complete new bike that they had in inventory.

In the end, Trek didn't give a shit about my brand loyalty, but 2nd Ave cared about my shop loyalty and they made sure I didn't get screwed. The next bike I buy won't be a Trek but it will be from 2nd Ave.

(For context, I have three Trek bikes, 2 of them bought from 2nd Ave).

RIP to my Beloved

Took my 2026 ALR4 in for it's 30 day to instigate a creak and it has a factory defect causing the rear axel to be off center. Obviously not fixable and there are no replacement frames left in this color that I love in size small. Props to my LBS for catching this (2nd Ave Sports). Have currently been offered the hiddious bronze ALR5 frame. Asked if they can give me carbon instead and I'll pay the difference in the price of the frames (also asked if the parts will even switch). LBS checking on that. I can update if anyone is interested.
