Upgrading to 15.8.1 via USB through OCLP 2.5.1

Maybe I just have forgotten (highly possible), but I just downloaded the 15.8.1 installer via OCLP so as to put it on a USB so I could install it later when I had some free time.

Well I Selected download "Create macOS installer", selected and downloaded 15.8.1 and after down load it asked if I wanted to "Install macOS Sequoia:15.8.1 (24H32)", but no option to write it to a USB stick, maybe I have truly lost my mind, but the last time I did this was in the previous version of OCLP it prompted me to a USB, does this happen when I press the install, if so I'll just have to wait till I'm actually got plenty of time to complete the process.

My goal today was to just have the installer on the USB ready for when I was able to have some undisturbed time. Sorry for the "stupid question" in advance

MX XFCE Linux and tailscale

Was considering installing MX XFCE Linux on my 2015 macbook pro, tried the live version, but then read some posts about Tailscale not being compatible as it uses SystemVinit, even thought I did chose and download a systemd version, I did try Tailscale from the USB live install stick.
So question as ling as I install the. systemd version on my SSD Tailscale should work, right?

Considering going Linux on a 2015 MBP 11,4

I'm sure it's been asked many times before, but Linux distros change all the time and usually get better as they go. Currently I have a 2015 Mac Book Pro 11,4 with 16GB of memory and a 500GB SSD, and I've been using OLCP to get Sequoia running, and until recently it's been running well, but lately there have been numerous issues that have been taking too long to figure out.

All my other machines run Linux, and I've really only been hanging on to macOS for sentimental reasons for the most part, as I've been using Linux everywhere else for as long as it been around.

So I'm looking for a recommendation of which Linux based OS works well and has most if not all the drivers for the following specs:

>Mac Book Pro 11,4
2.2Ghz Intel Quad Core i7
16GB RAM, 500GB SSD
Intel Iris Pro 1536MB
Broadcom BCM43xx - WiFi
Broadcom BCM_20703A1 - Bluetooth

Obviously the need/nice to have's would be WiFi, Keyboard, Track Pad, Video working out of the box, but not adverse to downloading drivers a head of time if anyone knows the best place to get them.

Using caddy + apache, to access by tailscale only

I just want to bounce an idea I thought of that would simplify my setup of my self hosted web base services.
First I access my system only by Tailscale, there is reverse proxy, no registered domain, nothing. I access all my docker services via tailscale services that are provisioned by Docktail, and everything works.
However I have a few (3-4) web base custom services that run on a bare metal installed apache web server, but I want to access them also via tailscale, with a let’s crypt cert (the web apps require https) so while i could (and to) use tailscale cert to get the required https certificate, I have to remember to renew the cert every 90 days, while not too complicated or tedious I wanted to automate the process.
So I thought if I moved apache to say 8080 then installed caddy to act as a reverse proxy to the apache but caddy would only be acceptable via tailscale and would use the tailscale domain it would get the required cert and renew them.
The question is does this sound like a dumb overly complicated way of doing this and would it there be any conflict as i’m using tailscale services for my docker stuff and potentially caddy for the bare metal web stuff.
It seems reasonable to me, but I have a tendency to sometimes over complicate things the other people think I’ve lost my mind (which I probably have 😉).
If anyone has the time to just tell me it’s not a bad idea or it’s dumb and move on that’s fine. I know some would just ask AI the question, but I being old school would prefer to ask people even at the risk of being downvoted 😎

Starting Debian in rescue mode

As I was wanting to do some restructuring of the LVM on my Debian 13 box, have planed out all the necessary step on paper, but when I launch into rescue mode the file system is still mounted, I gather this because I used rescue from the grub menu.
Is it required to boot using a usb stick , but my usb stick won’t have the same kernel version and the machine is running, does that really matter just for LVM resizing etc.

LVM and multipath question Debian 13

I have a host the is running Debian 13 and it is using LVM to manage the single SSD as I had/have intentions to add further SSD's later.

So the installer created: (I left the original size's out because I couldn't remember them)

sda disk
├─sda1 part /boot/efi
├─sda2 part /boot
└─sda3 part
  ├─infinity--vg-root lvm /
  ├─infinity--vg-var lvm /var
  ├─infinity--vg-swap_1 lvm [SWAP]
  ├─infinity--vg-tmp lvm /tmp
  └─infinity--vg-home lvm /home

This was all fine until the system was in use and /var became filled up rather quickly, so after a /var that was too small became a issue I added a 480G SSD added it to the LVM and add the space to vg-var, which is fine everything works as expected. And as such the disk layout looks like:

sda 8:0 0 1.9T 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 976M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda2 8:2 0 977M 0 part /boot
└─sda3 8:3 0 1.9T 0 part
  ├─infinity--vg-root 254:0 0 93.1G 0 lvm /
  ├─infinity--vg-var 254:1 0 529.4G 0 lvm /var
  ├─infinity--vg-swap_1 254:2 0 15.8G 0 lvm [SWAP]
  ├─infinity--vg-tmp 254:3 0 2.8G 0 lvm /tmp
  └─infinity--vg-home 254:4 0 1.7T 0 lvm /home
sdb 8:16 0 447.1G 0 disk
└─infinity--vg-var 254:1 0 529.4G 0 lvm /var

The question I have since this addition the system is now running:

root 524 1 0 Aug04 ? 00:00:29 /usr/sbin/multipathd -d -s

And I thought multipath only got used in cases of fiber channel or remote SCSI arrays, can say I've ever seen it in a simple 2 SSD small system arrangement. I this normal or am I missing something?

The DE on Almalinux 10

First of let me say I think you have done a fine job with almalinux, and for the most part it feels like centos, (the one we used a lot when I was SSA).

But here is the rub, and it’s not so much an almalinux thing, it’s a me thing. I Hate Gmome!! Some of the gmome apps are fine could live with them there, the the actual DE and the GDM drive me to…

Sure most server hosts don’t even have a DE, and 95% of the time your accessing everything by SSH, so it not like it’s life threatening or anything, But when I do have to work on a host that has a minimal DE and its GNOME it loose my mind.

Normally if I needed a minimal DE on a host I just put something like XFCE, now I get it Red Hat Enterprise ships with GNOME, fine that’s their corporate choice.

But has anyone got a pre canned XFCE (or similar) or am I going to have to do it my self, that’s fine, I was just hoping it might be out there.

I realize thus might not be ideal....but

I want to reinstall Sequoia 15.7.7 back on my 2015 MBP which currently has 15.8.?.

The machine has gotten in to an almost unusable state, while I do have all my important data backup my time machine backups where lost when one on my host server was destroyed.

I want to be able to create a boot USB from OCLP that is currently on disk then reinstall Sequoia over top of the current install.

First question will this work, second question is the a step by step guide as I've lost all my original notes

Sequoia after beta update has network connect but...

I can open a browser and surf the web, I can open a SSH client and connect to a server. But if I open mail, it can connect to any configured mail server, if I open system setting/updates it can't connect to the apple update server. And even the APP Store can't open the main main page of the app

Even tailscale works when turned on, It's like anything that uses an Apple networked app it doesn't work, other network apps work fine...

Quick question about Sequoia 15.7.8 update

So about a week ago I updated my 2015 MBP to the suggested 15.7.8, without and issues and proceeded to get on with my life.(As a side note I have the macOS Sequoia Public Beta turned on, on to reduce the update flag non-sense).

Then a couple of days ago I noticed the unrelenting update flag popped up again, initially I was going to ignore it, but curiosity got the better of me and I looked, and to my surprise it tells be there is a Sequoia update to 15.7.8 while also informing me that 15.7.8 is currently installed....like WTF?

Question is has any other OCLP / Sequoia users noticed this?, done this?, and even explain this?. Like the could have made it 15.7.8(a) and raised less suspicion in my mind.

In LAN DNS/DHCP

So, correct me if I’m wrong, my plan is to run a DNS/DHCP on the internal LAN 192.168.2.0/24, and I know it’s simple just turn off the DHCP in the giga hub.

The question is, the is not going to affect the fibe TV receivers I have on the same giga hub. I can see from the management interface these TV devices are on a completely different network 10.x.x.x, but was curious if disabling the DHCP service in the giga hub would also prevent the TV devices getting an address, or is it (hopefully) all hidden and behind the scenes when it come to TV services leaving the internet settings available for me to “adjust”.

I acquired a Dell OptiPlex 7040 as a emergency replacement

Long story short i needed to replace a machine that had been damage during a move, and not having a lot of disposable cash purchased a OptiPlex 7040 refurbished from amazon, (what can I say I could just afford it at the time)

It is a decent machine and will spend it's life as Linux host server, I'll be upgrading the memory a little latter when I find some a reasonable price, But right now the machine came with a

What if any would be a workable drop in replacement CPU that would at least give me 2 threads per core. 6 cores physical 2 threads per core would be great but I'm not going to be greedy.

I just want to stay on sequoia, Stopping the red update flag for update, visually annoying

A while back a someone posted a script that changed via com.apple.applicationaccess to stop the red flag from appearing, and it worked wonderful. Unfortunately after my update to 15.7.7 I guess that setting got over written.

I was wondering if anyone saw, and remembers/save that post. I though I had, but I've been though the saved, searched my machine, looked everywhere. Anybody remember or got a clue, sorry for being old and forgetful....

Is it really unreasonable of me want my service to work

For the most part over the many year with Bell Services. But over the past couple of days I think I’m reassessing my personal rating for Bell

It all started yesterday morning when I work up to no internet, (3am, couldn’t sleep), so I hard booted the modem to no avail and of course other than there (so help) AI there was nobody so I sat fuming this just after 9am

At 9am started my completely wasted day explaining the problem to no less than 3 techs (and i use that term loosely), and a sales person (why, hell if I know)

Out of all that all I got was they did a factory reset remotely and my service comes back for 1-3 hours then devices start falling off the network, (both hardwired and wireless, and not always the same ones).

The last chap I spoke to, where by blood pressure was to high to record, I asked If I could get a new giga hub as the one was obviously on its last legs. He said no, you’ll be fine after the factory reset there will be no more problems <click>

Well it’s wasn’t fine, I did 2 more factory resets before bed, just so I could watch some TV, and had to do it AGAIN this morning just to get started, ( this time lucky one of my Linux hosts had connectivity so could factory reset through the web interface.

Question Is, how do I make these “fine” individuals get me a new modem TODAY, (and I don’t drive I’m mobility challenged), I don’t thinks it unreasonable to just want the service I pay through the nose for to just work.

It always used to work, but then the brought in AI and fired a bunch of people yo save costs and give me less service

Tailscale service setup

I know this may sound like a well worn stupid question, but in the particular area of interest, the setup, configuration, etc of tailscale services there are a few different methods available to those of use who who’s to access our hosted services, across our tailnets and NOT use a reverse proxy. And as I have to reconfigure my setup yet again i wanted to know which method do you all use to configure a tailnet service, to avoid using a sidecar configuration. Do you:
a) tsbridge,
b) manual (by method originally described by tailscale),
c) docktail,
d) some else or custom devised by you

I would really appreciate to know which way you use and briefly why if you can. This is just for my own sanity as I’ve tried them all and while each work (most of the time), which should I hang my hat on this time.

Debian 13 running Debian 14 kernel, getting back

So I was installing a package following the instructions, everything seamed fine but after the reboot, while the machine was working I realized it had installed Debian testing and was now running "Forky" (Debian 14), somewhat horrified I search and found instructions to rollback fro Forky back to Trixie, while it plainly said this is not recommended the author stated he's done it a few times successfully...so I did follow the instructions, and for the most part it worked and I'm back in Trixie...mostly,

While everything checks out as Trixie the kernel that running is

And while everything is stable. (right now), I'd like to get the kernel back where it belongs, now I've been up til now spending most of my time in the Red Hat world, I have recently been switching over to Debian, (long story), and am not completely "in tune" with all of the more advanced "tricks"

Anyway, I checked what kernels are installed on the system and it seems encouraging

So the question here, if not obvious, how get it back to Trixie versioned kernel "deb13-amd64/stable". which the other Debian box I have is running

$ uname -r
6.12.86+deb13-amd64

And yes I know the probable correct answer is just reinstall and restore back up, I though since I found myself in this somewhat embarrassing situation, this would be a good time to learn more about Debian.

I know I don’t like to be first out of the gate updating versions, and my last remaining fedora 42 host is work just fine. Due to a lot of personal changes in my life I’ve been making a lot of changes to my computer systems, and it’s still up in the air if I’m going to update 42 to a newer fedora or going to go with something LTS. Rock solid stability with as few updates as possible are sort of what I’m shooting for.

As I still haven’t made the absolute decision to not upgrade to a newer version of fedora, how late can I leave it (drop dead date) to easily move to 43 or 44.?

Okay I'm not presenting my dashboard, but this is relevant. As we don't (want/easily) expose docker socket/proxy across multiple docker hosts, what has everyone's solution to getting homepage to auto populate containers across multiple docker hosts ever since docker 29, without have to hand code the other docker hosts containers by hand.

So I have happily been using Docktail to auto magically setup my Tailscale service, and it works flawlessly for my purposes, with the configuration of one Linux host running my docker containers.

So now that I have acquired a new to me host that will also be running some containers and thus needs to communicate to Docktail. Normally I would have had docker-socket-proxy running on both hosts and then it would have been a no brainier. But since Docker 29 came into our lives docker-socket-proxy no longer functions and there is no indication if and or when an update would be coming.

So the question is is there anyone else here a) using Docktail in a "more than one docker host" configuration, or b) have a working docker socket proxy that would allow a container on host A know about containers running on host B.

My first though was maybe just run a second instance of Docktail on the second host, but I was curious if anyone had done this or have a better way of setting this up, before I just blindly go ahead set up a second Docktain on host B and thoroughly break everything.

TIA
