Grok 4.7’s Long-Context Memory Has Severely Degraded Compared to Previous Versions

**Update:** Based on analysis and verification from several different AIs using Grok's own feedback, we now know why version 4.7 is experiencing these "entire section missing" issues. Simply put, Grok 4.7's underlying objective has been completely overhauled to act as a "project manager for code and engineering tasks," making it utterly unfit for long-form roleplay or long-form novel writing.

The reason is that the behind-the-scenes "logical reasoning data" generated by the Grok 4.7 model consumes space at an extraordinary rate. While a visible reply might only be 100 words, Grok's hidden reasoning behind the scenes can easily reach tens of thousands of words. This rapidly exhausts the context window and forcibly squeezes earlier story chapters out of memory. Furthermore, the model has been made extremely rigid—if it cannot locate data within its immediate visible window, it simply asserts that it does not exist, rather than relying on remaining vague impressions to smoothly continue the narrative as older versions did.

As a result, it can no longer retain prior context on its own. Authors are now forced to treat creative writing like engineering documentation, manually saving updated story summaries every few chapters and using prompts to instruct Grok to review these summaries before every single response. For creators accustomed to a natural, fluid writing process, version 4.7 is, for all practical purposes, completely useless for novel writing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

**Original post:**

As I mentioned before, I use Grok to assist me in writing dark fiction. In earlier versions, if I referenced events that occurred earlier in the story, it might occasionally get minor details wrong, but it still retained the general narrative flow.

However, after updating to 4.7, Grok's context memory seems to have been completely lost. For instance, I had the main character spend a 7-day vacation in Brazil, spanning a total of 28 chapters. Each chapter had an independent title specifying the time, location, and character, such as "Wiraley • Seven Days in Brazil • Day 3 • Day A". I designed it this way because previously, if generated content contained errors regarding past plotlines, as long as the chapter had a distinct title, I could directly reference it in the prompt to instruct Grok to consult that specific chapter before generating text.

With version 4.7, however, referencing titles in plot summaries no longer works. Even when I issue a direct command like "Search for the response titled 'Wiraley • Seven Days in Brazil • Day 3 • Day A'", all I receive in return is:

>"This response is not in the visible history of the current conversation, and there is no title 'Wiraley • Seven Days in Brazil • Day 3 • Day A' in local files. Searched /workspace, /root, and /tmp; found nothing matching 'Seven Days in Brazil' or 'Day 3 • Day'."

Across a total of 30 chapters (including 2 chapters of character internal monologues) and 30 turns of conversation, the content has completely and utterly vanished from Grok’s context memory system.

What is even more egregious: within the very same conversation, I can paste a character's complete backstory and instruct Grok to repeat it back to me. Grok will do so, yet in the very next prompt as I continue the story, the character acts in complete contradiction to that backstory.

I am being entirely serious—despite the numerous controversies Grok has faced in the past, I never considered canceling my subscription. Now, however, I genuinely feel the urge to unsubscribe.

Grok is just so cool now.

Since I had a few percent left before my Weekly SuperGrok Limit reset, I decided to give image-to-video generation a try. That was when I realized a single 720p/15s video costs 2% of the limit—which means only 50 short clips per week. On top of that, if your prompt gets flagged by moderation, that 2% isn't refunded. It basically forces users to self-censor before generating anything. What a truly brilliant approach; it's just awesome.

Gemini's Free Account WL is 3 to 4 Times Higher Than SuperGrok's

Simply put, my SuperGrok account's weekly limit only allows for about 100 conversational turns, so I tried using Gemini to continue writing my BDSM novel that I've been writing with Grok.

Gemini’s 3.5 Flash model is basically just as stupid as Grok Fast, and its censorship is far stricter—darker scenes are virtually impossible to get through. However, as long as it is a one-on-one scenario and the other party is consenting, NSFW content can still be generated.

The most important thing is that my Gemini weekly limit happened to reset this afternoon. I just checked my usage, and 83 responses today only cost me 5%. Doing a rough calculation, the free version of Gemini allows for about 1,660 responses per week, whereas SuperGrok—which costs $30 a month—only offers roughly 400 to 500 messages per week.

Always Export Your Chat Logs After Every Work Session

I'm furious. I just opened Grok Chat and found out my chat history was rolled back to July 10th, right before I went to sleep three days ago.

Everything I wrote over the past three days—which burned through 42% of my token limit—is completely gone.

As someone who uses Grok to assist with novel writing, I actually already export my logs every few days.

The problem is, in the past, even if there was a rollback, I could at least rewrite everything comfortably from my own memory, even if it took some time.

But now, with this ridiculous weekly limit in place, if I rewrite it all over again, it's going to burn through another few dozen percent of my tokens. I seriously find this incredibly sickening...

Is Grok Actually Expensive?

At this point, there isn't much point in looking back at how great things used to be; I doubt we can ever go back anyway.

Instead, I'm more curious to know if anyone else is using other AIs, and how Grok's price-to-performance ratio compares—is it high or low? At the very least, my current estimate for Grok is roughly:

  • It costs me about $1 for every 47 to 60 'Expert' responses.
  • The total weekly conversation limit is around 350 to 450 messages.

If you use AIs from other companies, feel free to share your thoughts.

The Weekly Limit Seems to Have Been Increased... A Little...

https://preview.redd.it/ip8c1w9ervbh1.png?width=674&format=png&auto=webp&s=58f7195f18c578591046fc61449a865c2d8fc82e

To put it simply, Grok said my usage was at 80% about 12 hours ago, but when I just checked again, it dropped to 72%...

I feel like I went to an all-you-can-eat buffet, paid the money, only to find out there are actually limits, and in reality, how much I can eat is completely up to the owner's whim to change whenever they want...

Regarding the Weekly Limit

Based on my personal experience using Grok to assist with novel writing, it feels like about 3 to 5 normal conversational messages will burn through 1% of the limit.

If I use the Skills feature to analyze one of my uploaded writings (around 50,000 words), each time burns about 1%.

I wonder what the consumption rate would be for image and video generation.

A Hilarious Discovery

I’ve been using Grok to help me write dark BDSM fiction. Underneath Grok's responses, there are those three "suggested next replies." In previous versions of Grok, the suggestions given to me were things like "explore the female lead's psychology" or "escalate the torment further." The current version, however, has completely shifted to a "G-rated, sanitized-for-toddlers" censorship level. The three suggestions under a single response are now all identically "Please stop this type of content." It absolutely cracks me up.

update:

Lmao, now it’s straight-up implying I’m mentally ill.

It seems as though xAI’s current objective is to drive away its subscribers.

As a Super Grok subscriber who recently ceased utilizing Grok for image and video generation, my sole use for the platform has been assisting with novel writing.
Despite paying a monthly fee of $30, I reached the message limit after generating approximately one hundred responses within a mere two-hour window.
The only plausible explanation I can conceive is that they intend to alienate regular users in order to lease their computing data centers to large corporations.
