Is a gimmick needed now to gain some type of exposure in the UG or has this always been a thing?

I feel like most UG artist started with some type of "gimmicky" marketing tactic to gain traction. A lot of people would say this a modern issue but honestly if you look at a lot of the older "underground" forefathers it was some type of gimmick or marketing tactic to get the listener to tap in.
