I (25M) told my girlfriend to beg her arranged match to reject her. His response ruined everything, and now they are engaged.
I (25M) just lost the most mature, beautiful relationship I’ve ever had, and the way it happened feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from. I need to get this out because I am completely shattered.
For context, we both are from Varanasi. We both work in IT and were living in Delhi. We poured so much effort, energy, and raw emotion into each other, and it was always reciprocated. (There were some earlier complications, but I’ll save those for another time—this is about how it all crashed down).
While we loved each other deeply, our backgrounds were a ticking time bomb. I am General category; she is OBC. Her family comes from generational wealth; I am entirely self-made and still building. More importantly, her family is fiercely traditional. She respected her father immensely but was terrified of the temper and furiousness of her uncles and brothers.
Six months into our relationship, the inevitable happened: her father started forwarding her marriage proposals.
She was terrified. She wanted us to expose our relationship to our parents right then and there. But I hesitated. Honestly, I had three massive weights holding me back:
- Based on the stories she told me, I knew how aggressive and furious her relatives could get.
- Because of some things in her past, I needed just a little more time to be 100% sure before making a lifelong commitment.
- I earn well, but I have zero savings. I had just spent everything on my sister’s wedding, and my older brother is about to get married too. I simply wasn't financially capable of taking a stand yet.
So, I asked her for the only thing I could: Time. I told her to hold them off for as long as she could.
A month later, her father forced her hand. He ordered her to come home and meet a prospective boy.
We came up with a desperate plan. We decided she would go home, meet the guy privately, confess that she loves someone else, and beg him to call off the marriage from his end. I made absolutely sure she wasn't doing this under pressure from me. She assured me, "Even if it weren't for you, I would never say yes to this person."
She went home. For an entire day, her phone was switched off.
I was pacing in pure agony. Did she tell him? Did she confront her dad? Was she safe? The silence was suffocating. Finally, late that night, I didn't hear from her—I got a call from her best friend.
According to her best friend: My girlfriend did tell the guy everything. But instead of acting like a decent human being and backing out, this independent, well-earning man did the most cowardly thing imaginable. He went straight to her strict father and snitched on our entire relationship.
And the worst part? After exposing her, he looked at her furious father and said: "Sort it out between you people. I have no concerns from my side."
I am completely shattered. What kind of man is so ego-driven or so desperate that he’s perfectly fine marrying a girl who just handed him her heart on a platter and told him it belongs to another guy?
Her father completely lost it. He verbally destroyed her for humiliating him in front of strangers and mentally broke her down until she agreed to marry the guy.
She said yes to him. Their Roka just happened.
And now, I am sitting here in Delhi, staring at my phone, realizing she is engaged to the man who betrayed her.
