Past gerrymandering in Spain

During the Spanish Restoration (1874–1931), Spain used FPTP under a controlled two-party system. The Conservative and Liberal parties would use both gerrymandering and caciquismo (the influence of the local rulling elite) to keep themselves in power and prevent both left-wing and regionalist parties from gaining representation. Examples of this include the districts of Vilademuls (red) and Torroella de Montgrí (teal) in the northeast. Funnily enough, the Vilademuls district would have been won back by a representative from the current two-party system in the latest general election, althouh marginally, after being a center-righ nationalist stronghold for a while.

Results if those districts had been in place in the latest general election:

Vilademuls Torroella de Montgrí
PSOE 24.77 % 23.57 %
Junts 21.62 % 24.12 %
ERC 16.23 % 17.36 %
SUMAR 10.12 % 11.22 %
PP 10.66 % 6.73 %
CUP 5.90 % 9.83 %
VOX 8.16 % 4.77 %
