AIO: my roommate had me walk to the ER
This happened a few years ago and at the time I was upset, but a mutual friend said I was overreacting. Throwaway just in case.
To preface: me (27f), my roommate (31f) lived together with one other roommate who was away at the time in a major city in the US. We were not friends previously but became friends over the course of living together and had been living together for about a year at this point.
At the time I didn’t know that I had endometriosis and PCOS/PMOS (I’ve got it handled now) but had been having significant pelvic pain that made walking for more than 2 or so blocks difficult. It got worse over time until eventually I was in really intense pain, and called my GP back home to see what I should do. She told me that it was possible I had ovarian torsion and to go to the closest ER immediately.
I’d never been to the ER, had no close friends in the area, had no money for an uber, and again, couldn’t walk without significant pain. I called my roommate, who had a car, and explained. I asked if she could take me to the ER. She told me she would, but first had to get her brows waxed and then take a group picture with the staff at her job. She said all of this would take less than an hour and a half. It took about 2 hours, and in the mean time, the pain got worse until what I now know was an ovarian cyst burst. I literally fell to the floor in pain when it happened and was really scared.
She got home a bit later and we headed to the ER, but when I asked where her car was she told me that she didn’t want to lose her parking spot, and we could walk. I was so stunned, and I didn’t want to go alone. So we walked slowly and painfully to the ER, about 15 minutes at a normal pace and yeah, there was a hill.
We got there, and she makes a big show telling the person checking me in that she’s my sister, and then sits down to wait with me. We’re there for maybe 30 minutes until she asks if I’m okay here to wait on my own, because she’s supposed to get drinks with her former professor. I’m over it at that point so I say it’s fine. I’m there for 13 hours and get home at 3 am (walking).
Am I overreacting? When I told our mutual friend at the time she said parking was difficult to find in the city so she understood. In the years since when I’ve told people this story they’ve gotten upset and shocked. My roommate definitely took advantage of me when we lived together (I basically became a live-in dog sitter, even though I love that pup), and I’ve since grown more of a spine, but in this specific case…that was fucked up, right?
