A new short video from Velvet Ashes.
Japanese post-punk / darkwave inspired by:
memory, loneliness, distance, city lights, and the atmosphere of old London nights seen from Japan.
Not only music, but atmosphere and emotion.

Thank you for listening.
Lately I’ve been thinking less about adding layers and more about atmosphere, silence and tension.
A lot of the music I make is influenced by a Japanese sense of “ma” — the space between sounds, the feeling of restraint, and the tension created by what is not played.
I’m interested in music that feels like it exists somewhere between reality and something dreamlike or unreal.
Not ambient exactly.
Not noise exactly.
Just a feeling of suspended space and quiet unease.
Sometimes a single delayed sound or an unnatural pause creates more emotion than adding another instrument.
Curious if other people here think about music this way too.
After exploring gothic and post-punk influences like Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees,
I've become increasingly curious about another side of the sound —
the colder, rhythmic, and more synth-driven side of post-punk and darkwave.
I've always been drawn to artists like:
Depeche Mode
New Order
Molchat Doma
Boy Harsher
There’s something hypnotic about that balance of melody, atmosphere, and pulse.
And I feel the Japanese scene must have its own interpretation of that style.
So I'm curious —
which Japanese bands would you recommend to fans of synth-driven post-punk, darkwave, or coldwave?
Both classic and modern artists are welcome.
Velvet Ashes is a gothic punk / darkwave project from Japan.
This performance video captures the raw energy of our sound — somewhere between post-punk, darkwave, and industrial.
Inspired by the underground spirit of classic gothic and post-punk scenes, we aim to create dark, sharp, and emotional music that resonates beyond borders.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
