New monument concept
When I visited RVA for the first time, I did the firefly tour led by the parks and rec director at the time. He told us a story about how in the 80s, there were so many broken beer bottles in the river that it was super dangerous to go to the river at all let alone get in the water.
He said there was a woman that was a passionate volunteer and she kept trying to get people involved too, and it wasn’t going well. So she decided to start volunteering in a white shirt, then many men started to follow her around and help her clean the river.
I believe this is a true story. Thus, there should be a movement to erect a monument of her on monument avenue.
ETA: I believe he said she was braless in a white shirt and had to get in the water to get the bottles… I think I didn’t make that clear hah
