Playing around between warlord and king to get a feel, but I can't figure out how you're supposed to fight properly.

Melee units get pummeled and citadels only slow things down while ranged units can't get a shot without being murdered by suicidal frontliners. Lancers get ganged on after any hit and skirmishers barely make a dent in health.

Other than just settling super defensively, authority pivot and spamming units until the ai gets bored, is there actual tactics that allow you to trade units well and maybe even take a city without it ending up a forever war?
