Hats off to…

the absolute throbber on a Slime bike this evening who came around me heading south towards de Beauvoir Square and then immediately cut left onto the Square in front of me, causing me to lock up, only to watch him run straight into the iron bollards with an almighty wallop and the noise that only a crashed Slime bike makes, accompanied by a loud fuuuuuuck.

Don’t be a dick next time.

Craig Charles?

I tuned in earlier and Craig Charles was on from 1pm. Is he standing in for Chris Hawkins this week?

What’s going on here then?

It’s raining here in south London, and I look out my window by the street lamp to see a dry patch. The rest of the pavement is wet, but a patch about 1.5m square is bone dry. So I go and have a look, and there’s nothing sheltering it from the rain. I crouch down and feel the tarmac, and it’s really warm. Warm enough to dry the rain out as it lands. There’s some kind of heat being generated under the tarmac. I can only assume it’s some sort of electrical issue, so I called the council emergency hot line (!!) and reported it.

If I don’t reply any further you’ll know it’s not ended well. Either that or they’ll start digging the pavement up at 3am.

Update; It’s 11.45am and I’m not dead. The tarmac is still hot. I called an emergency number last night and they took all the details, so now I’m just waiting. Thanks for all the pointers, I guessed it was a joint failure on the 415v supply too. Tho I I’ll call 105 if no-one turns up by 5pm.

And this is why you should check your rim daily…

Embarrassingly this is off my bike. And I’m a professional bike mechanic, ffs. I was able to split it like that with a pick. That was literally moments away from catastrophic failure.

I put 100psi in yesterday and this morning I noted the rear brake was pulsing. The wheel wasn’t out of true so I checked the rim and the sidewall was bulging out. Eek. So I grabbed a new rim and went to do a simple rim swap, unwound the drive side double-butted spokes and two of them snapped. I don’t have any 151mm in stock. Bugger.

I’m getting the train and bus home now. Check your rims for wear kids, and don’t be complacent.
