| the russians had the 7.62x39, they wanted something skinnier so they obviously based the 5.45x39 off of it.I was thinking how nice that would be to use as a handgun cartridge, but it's too long and would have too much muzzle blast, even if it didn't have much recoil.so then the 5.7x28 came to mind, limited as it is.the russians could base a similar cartridge off the 5.45x39. call it the 5.45x28.thanks to the wonders of PhotoShop, this has become a reality! sort of.L-R: 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 5.7x28, 5.45x28obviously there would be a comparison to the 7.62x25. that is a full power cartridge, a 5.45x28 would be correspondingly reduced in power, and probably better suited to the same things the 5.7x28 would be used for.discuss. |

This was a good idea, but I'd like to pick your brains a moment.
I kicked this around about 10 years ago. I got a kit for making 7.62x25 tokarev cases out of 5.56 lake city brass. I made several, but was having a hard time getting the neck brass thin enough to chamber properly. I shoot 5.45x39 (rarely) and absolutely love my ak74, to the point that I have a spare kit with the intention of building one for my daughter. But my friends shoot the m59 9-shot yugo tokarevs, and I found a conversion from a company in Oklahoma for the cz52, called 22 reed express. It necked the 7.62 brass down to 224 for easily available 22 bullets. I am interested in doing something similar for my pps43 kits but kind of thinking of waiting until the NFA gets zapped so I don't have to convert them to closed bolt.
I see no reason to reduce the power level, at all. The brass should be able to handle 55-62k psi. tok pressures of 36,500 exceed that of 10mm auto
Armscor came up with a version of it called 22tcm. Does anyone here shoot 22tcm and do you have any ideas about turning tokarev guns into .22 caliber bottleneck monsters? I have 22 to 30 cal plastic sabbots so it doesn't necessarily have to be done the hard way, but I was thinking of making a milled aluminum "Spider-sabbot" that would surround the 224 m855a1's or 7n24s and wouldn't increase the projectile length. Since I have to hand-form every case it wouldn't be too hard to use 22creedmoor or 22ARC neck sizer dies or something else to give it a steeper shoulder to accommodate a secant ogive needle type projectile (like the 5.45 7n24 shaped tungsten AP).
What do you guys think?
