The Miyazaki Method
Miyazaki famously makes watercolor concept pages, often times before he even has a plot in mind. He thinks of a cool image and just makes it. Then afterward, he makes the plot.
He grows it like a tree branching out in all directions, and sometimes has no clue how the story begins or even ends. This is the way we used to write stories as children. We weren't concerned with how it started or how it will end. We branched it outwards from a cool idea.
If I can channel even 10% of his creativity by mimicking his footsteps, I'm gonna do it. Here is a watercolor + pen work of my son's favorite movie ever - Ponyo.
