Panda Glass instead of PC+PMMA ;)
Hey everyone,
I'm completely new here (literally just made this Reddit account), but I've decided to support Minimal Company.
I'm currently using an iPhone 13 mini, which means I'm committed to small, portable phones (my previous device was the first-gen SE). Like many users here, I initially assumed the Clicks Communicator was the better device — bigger battery, touch-sensitive keyboard, user-friendly interface, Qi2, and so on.
But then the dealbreaker showed up: the keyboard.
Here in South Korea, a few YouTube reviewers have used both the Minimal Phone and Clicks devices, and their verdict was pretty consistent: the MP offers a better keyboard experience than Clicks.
That was a big surprise to me. I also compared the sound and feedback of both keyboards in those reviews, and the Clicks keyboard has this toy-like, old-flip-phone kind of feel to it. It comes across as cheap and flimsy — and in this category, the keyboard experience is the key factor when choosing a device.
Honestly, I'm surprised that almost nobody talks about the keyboard quality of these two devices, because it's crucial.
Of course, I know the MP02 has its share of controversies: a "relatively" small battery, no touch-sensitive keyboard, no microSD support, Qi instead of Qi2, the cover material (some claimed it would be glass, but the spec sheet still says PC+PMMA), and so on.
That said, in my humble opinion, the battery capacity is pretty decent for its size. The CC is a much bulkier device — 130.5 × 78.6 × 12 mm, versus the MP02's 122.6 × 72 × 9.48 mm. Much slimmer and narrower. And since the MP02's hub uses far fewer colors than typical launchers, it probably won't drain the battery as much as other smartphones do.
Still, a touch-sensitive keyboard really is essential for me — not for scrolling social media, but for a better typing experience. For example, on my iPhone I long-press the space bar and swipe to move the cursor when editing text. As a Korean speaker, I need to correct words pretty often, and deleting a run of Hangul characters takes longer than it does in most alphabet-based languages. I really hope the MP02 gets a similar feature (or a touch-sensitive keyboard) soon.
Since the MP02 is priced higher than its competitors, I think that after the Kickstarter campaign it should offer more features that appeal to a broader audience, not just niche users. Some things could definitely be developed further — Qi2 compatibility, clearer display cover specs, etc.
Nevertheless, the MP02 is still my go-to device. I'm going to pledge for two of them — one for me and one for my girlfriend.
The software has room to improve (or I can work around it myself), but hardware quality can't be fixed after the device ships. The CC uses pretty cheap-feeling materials, has a clumsy, toy-sounding keyboard, and is too bulky to be truly portable for me.
I'd like to wrap up by expressing my sincere appreciation to the Minimal Company team.
Thank you for making an ideal daily driver.
