Fixes for bad ARC syncing between older ATV 4k and Onkyo tuner

Hello,

We at one time wanted to set up ARC output to our Onkyo tuner, but we experienced some very bad audio/video sync problems between it and the output from the ATV to our HD projector (no smart TV), and never could get it to work, so we fell back on bridging the sound output to an older ATV which still had an optical out.

We’d like go try again sometime, but are there any recommended settings/configurations/cable configs to look into beforehand?

Re: Apple TV intermittent drops after upgrade

Hello,

Our ISP recently upgraded us to a 2 gig speed tier with a Calix Gigaspire Blast GS4237.

We run a slightly unusual hardware setup with an old 2019 MBP as an iTunes server (Ethernet to the AP), plus 2 AppleTVs, also connected by Ethernet to the AP. Why 2? We run a bare HD projector connected by HDMI to the newer Apple TV, and as we had very bad audio sync issues trying to run ARC through the tuner, we fell back on bridging the audio from the newer ATV to the old one using Bridge mode, and then piping the audio into the tuner via optical. Yes, it’s old school tech, but it worked for years until this upgrade.

Now, we have headaches: the iTunes server only streams for about 10 minutes and then the hardware connection to/from the ATVs drop/stalls, and then about 5 minutes later, picks up again, so it’s not a matter of the stream itself stopping.

The timing on this points definitely points toward the new AP as the culprit, but what? The Level 2 at the ISP swears it’s not a QoS issue, I’ve disabled both ProtectIQ and ExperienceIQ temporarily to troubleshoot, but what else should he look for, both on our end and on the backend? Does this AP have known issues with ATVs/Bonjour/etc? Does it have authentication/protocol handshake problems? Is the f-ker cursed? I’m pulling my hair out looking for an answer.

Any ideas, hivemind?

Additional info:

The drops are happening on both the server setup AND running an Airplay connection straight from an iPhone. It just takes longer for the drop out to occur.

Also, we had a case where it is causing issues with normal https surfing/posting. I attempted to make a monthly mortgage payment today. The login page uses the mort number as part of the auth process, but on wifi, the page would not take the number and kept erroring. I took the phone off wifi and tried it once more - worked perfectly.

The AP is the problem here, I’m certain of it. But the ISP won’t let us downgrade to the lower speed tier with what was working hardware … they’re trying to get customers off the older architecture.

Now if I can get them to send an L2 out with Wireshark so we can force the issue ….
