How are y'all playing on Heroic and Legendary?

I can never play on those 2 levels. I play exclusively on Challenging only. Nothing higher nothing lower. It's not that I can't do those 2 levels, but I can't enjoy playing at those levels.

How is the experience on Heroic and Legendary like? Is it always 1 or 2 steps away from death? Always has to be on super high alert? Requires extremely fast and accurate reactions all the time? Always being a glass cannon?

I'm someone who likes healing and tanking much more than dps. That's the role I usually play in RPGs... healers, tanks, etc. So naturally I really dislike glass cannons. But in a game like Division, you ultimately have to kill all enemies to win, and I play solo most of the time so I'm the only one I can depend on to end all enemies.

Usually, I run this loadout...

  • 4p Umbra
  • Memento
  • 1 Belstone
  • 5 blue, 2 yellow, 1 red
  • Mostly crit attributes
  • Bulwark shield max tier
  • Striker drone tier 2
  • Diamondback
  • Lexington (In-sync)
  • KARD-45 (In-sync)

Or, even more defensively...

  • 4p Foundry
  • Memento
  • 1 Belstone
  • 5 blue, 2 yellow, 1 red
  • Mostly crit attributes
  • Bulwark shield max tier
  • Striker drone tier 2
  • Police Mk17 (Lucky shot)
  • Lexington (In-sync)
  • Liberty

As you can see, I have a very comfortable playstyle, but these loadouts aren't suitable to be used on Heroic and Legendary. When I check out other people's builds for Heroic and Legendary and Master, I thought... "Wow, that's pretty darn squishy." That's the issue. The higher the difficulty level, the more narrow your choices of viable builds. I can't enjoy the game playing what and how I like to play on those higher levels.

So, back to my question... How is it like to play on levels above Challenging? Thank you.

Edit:
Wow thanks for all the replies. Rest assured every comment will be read. Thanks.

Edit 2:
I understand the strategies and tricks to push forward aggressively in higher difficulty levels, but as I said, my preference for defensive play in games means I love the feeling of not being able to die no matter how enemies come at me. Lol. Like there's nothing they could do to kill me while I end them. My fun is derived from such a playstyle. But the tips and tricks you all mentioned are very helpful in many ways. I highly appreciate. Thanks to all of you. I play mostly solo, so if there's a need for me to go higher levels (like in order to get that specific exotic or something), then I would. Thank you.

Something about Pestilence stacks with Umbra

Is it just me or does the game not register the stacks of Pestilence properly while shooting at the speed of Umbra?

It says max Pestilence stacks are 50, and Pestilence has 100 bullets. But I think I didn't see its max stacks even after I'd emptied all 100 bullets?
