Video footage of the meeting for a 70-foot-tall monstrosity in Carlsbad Village. What do you think?

If you live in Carlsbad, especially anywhere near the Village, you need to know about this.

Rincon Homes, one of the main developers responsible for the UBBUI (Ugly Big Box Unit Infestation), is proposing a 70-foot, 5-story mixed-use building at 840 Carlsbad Village Drive — the old Union Bank corner at Jefferson Street. The Planning Commission just voted 6 to 1 to recommend approval. One commissioner, Lafferty, voted no. The rest waved it through.

The height limit in the Village is 45 feet; a 70-foot-tall building will set a new precedent. The parking situation is amping up to be a real nightmare. They're demolishing a building designed by Tucker Sadler without proper historic review. The room was practically empty during public testimony, so no one was really there to speak out against this.

City Council hasn't voted yet. That means there is still time to do something about it.

Show up to the City Council meeting. Submit a public comment online. Call your council member. This is exactly the kind of project that passes because people assume someone else is paying attention.

We have already had so many other recent out-of-scale projects approved that are going to change the character of the Village forever.

The Village is worth fighting for. Don't let this one go quietly.
